1.5.0.1423b (x64): unpinned taskbar button shows generic Windows application icon

Post by mj6jl5lk6j6 »

Everything 1.5.0.1423b (x64): running, unpinned taskbar button shows a generic Windows application icon instead of the Everything icon.

Environment:
- Windows 11
- Everything executable: J:\StandaloneApps\Everything_1.5b\Everything.exe
- Version: 1.5.0.1423b (x64)
- Explorer displays the correct embedded icon for Everything.exe.
- The issue persists after fully terminating Everything and launching with a newly generated Everything.ini.
- Restarting Explorer changes the generic fallback icon but does not restore the correct Everything icon.
- Other taskbar application icons are normal.
- Everything 1.5a did not have this issue on the same system/configuration.
- Displays: three 2560×1440 displays at 150% and one 1920×1080 display at 150%; no 4K display and no 300% scaling (earlier bug report)

Please check if there's a dead Everything shortcut in your Start menu.
The Taskbar button will use this shortcut for the icon.
Remove any dead shortcuts.

Please try fixing the taskbar button:
  • Right click the Everything button in the taskbar, right click Everything and click Properties.
  • Click Change Icon.
  • Set Look for icons in this file to:
    %ProgramFiles%\Everything\Everything.exe
  • Press ENTER.
  • Click OK to select the icon.
  • Click OK.
  • Restart Windows.

Taskbar button with blank icon with the wrong target and start location.

Thank you. I did find and delete a dead Start Menu shortcut pointing to my former portable location:

Code: Select all

J:\StandaloneApps\Everything_1.5a\Everything.exe
However, deleting that shortcut did not change the generic taskbar icon, including after a reboot.

Additional findings that may be helpful for other portable users who experience this behavior:
  • I start/show Everything using my configured Ctrl+Shift+F “Show Window” hotkey.
  • Task Manager confirms the active 1.5b processes are launched from:

    Code: Select all

    "J:\StandaloneApps\Everything_1.5b\Everything.exe" -svc
    "J:\StandaloneApps\Everything_1.5b\Everything.exe" -startup
  • But when I inspected the running taskbar button:

    Code: Select all

    Right-click taskbar button -> right-click Everything -> Properties
Explorer showed this stale relaunch target:

    Code: Select all

    J:\StandaloneApps\Everything_1.5a\Everything.exe -is-relaunch-command
“Change Icon” also reported that Windows could not find:

    Code: Select all

    J:\StandaloneApps\Everything_1.5a\Everything.exe
  • Searching for the literal old path found two stale shortcuts under:

    Code: Select all

    %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\ImplicitAppShortcuts\
    Both
    Everything.lnk
files targeted the obsolete 1.5a executable.
  • Renaming one of those
    ImplicitAppShortcuts\...\Everything.lnk
files immediately fixed the running taskbar icon.
So, in my case, the active cause was a stale Explorer implicit application shortcut/relaunch record pointing to the prior 1.5a portable folder.

For reference, this occurred after moving from:

Code: Select all

J:\StandaloneApps\Everything_1.5a\
to:

Code: Select all

J:\StandaloneApps\Everything_1.5b\
Everything.exe
itself displayed its correct icon in File Explorer throughout.

Maybe you could export your registry and then search all locations for Everything.exe or Everything.lnk or whatever.
Maybe something somewhere is sitting on a dead spot. Idk, I'd think the icons come from the individual exes so the registry doesn't apply.
I've only used portable versions and icons have never faltered.
Latest build I have in an instance running right now is 1423b.

Renaming one of those \ImplicitAppShortcuts\
Prior to the rename, did the icon itself in the /ImplicitAppShortcuts/ directory show the expected (Everything) icon?

And the "rename".
Just what did you mean by that?
You renamed the .lnk itself? The /<GUID foldername>/ itself? Or you changed the Properties of the .lnk to point to the 1.5b location rather then the 1.5a? Or...?

(And since I wasn't familiar, particularly, Windows Shortcut and Pinned Taskbar Icon handling.)

No: it was the icon I was seeing in Taskbar
therube wrote: Wed Sep 16, 2026 3:31 pm You renamed the .lnk itself?
Yes; just added "X" at end (i.e. Everything.lnkX)
