I have 2 dead HDDs for which I keep the index in Everything to search files I lost. I'm keeping the drive letters in windows unassigned, but when I plugged-in a USB HDD it automatically got assigned a drive letter from one of my dead HDDs. After removing the USB drive Everything showed every offline file not grayed out, even from the drive where the drive letter stayed unused.
This is fixed by closing Everything and restarting the windows service.
Just wanted to leave this here.
Thanks for all the work.

[minor Bug] Everything confuses offline state of files
Re: [minor Bug] Everything confuses offline state of files
Thank you for the issue report nova2k1,
Please make a backup of your Everything.db and consider exporting these dead drives to an EFU File List.
Everything may take up to 30 seconds to detect the volumes as offline after adding or removing a volume to the system.
I am unable to reproduce the issue my end.
Are you able to reproduce the issue?
If so, could you please capture a debug log:

If so, could you please capture a debug log:
- unplug your USB drive.
- Restart Everything and the Service.
- In Everything, from the Tools menu, under the Debug submenu, click Start Debug Logging...
- plug-in your USB drive and reproduce the issue.
- Wait for one minute.
- In Everything, from the Tools menu, under the Debug submenu, click Stop Debug Logging...
--This will open your %TEMP%\Everything Debug Log.txt in your text editor. - Please send this file in a bug report.

I had a second look and the offline file confusion happens when there are 2 offline media with the same drive letter in Everything.

Reading this suggests you are using all 3 as folder monitors or at least non-NTFS?nova2k1 wrote: Sun May 24, 2026 8:27 am log sent

If you have all 3 as folders, one of them should be replaced when the same drive letter is used.
If you have C: and D: and you have a new device that is also D:, then a rescan happens all of what was there before for D:\ should be removed.
That's not a bug, folder monitoring doesn't know what device is what.
I think FAT works similar to NTFS, it knows which device is which.
This is fixed by not using one instance for all devices.
Alternatively don't run the instance, plug in the USB-stick or whatever, change the drive letter from D: to E: in disk config, now all 3 can fit.
But you will find the same issue in the future with another D:\.
Whatever you plug into the future, add as NTFS or FAT if applicable, including this USB-stick or whatever.
Alternatively to that, make a sub-folder and dump everything in there and then folder-monitor that sub-folder.
Thus if you have a dead D:\ and D:\D1 monitored, the new D1 one will not replace. But I don't know why you'd add the working stuff as folders..I guess something that's on a Linux filesystem?
With that sub-optimal method you can use the fsi: numbers in the statistics window to only see stuff for the dead D:\.
It would be much easier, if you have NTFS/FAT devices, to add them as such.
Re: [minor Bug] Everything confuses offline state of files
I never said I use folders, those are all directly monitored NTFS drives.
Also no information is lost, just data which should be shown as offline (grayed out) is shown online (in white text).

Re: [minor Bug] Everything confuses offline state of files
Thank you for the logs nova2k1,
I was able to reproduce the issue my end.
Everything is setting the online status to unknown for all drives when stopping the non-system volume monitors.
This occurs when a device is unplugged.
The issue will be fixed in the next update.

Re: [minor Bug] Everything confuses offline state of files
Everything 1.5.0.1414b fixes an issue with the online status of volumes being set to unknown when adding or removing a volume.
Does the issue persist with this version?
