Everything-1.5.0.1410b.x64.zip: Everything service and new indexing?

Post by Biff »

After unzipping and starting Everything-1.5.0.1410b.x64.zip a message appears to select Everything Service (I pressed OK) and such. Now Everything is indexing properties.

Is it like it should be? So it then indexes the properties of all drives again?

No, Everything 1.5.0.1410b should work without a reindex.

Where did you extract your Everything.exe?
What is in this folder?

Please try terminating Everything.exe
Move out Everything.ini and Everything.db from your portable location.
Restart Everything.
Does the reindex persist?

Where did you extract your Everything.exe?
On the external hard drive I downloaded it to. With WinRar. Then I copied the content (two files) over the existing Everything and clicked overwriting (before I in Task Manager had selected the Everything service and pressed DEL). Like I do every time.

The Everything.lng has to be overwritten as well?
What is in this folder?
This:
Everything.lng
Everything.exe

Why do you ask?
Please try terminating Everything.exe
Move out Everything.ini and Everything.db from your portable location.
Restart Everything.
Does the reindex persist?
Yes, it does:

Everything 1.5b Beta - Portable Version Update Recommendations
What / why Beta version? Ah, there is no name anymore on the Everything window (like always before). It's now a Beta? The "a" kept (I thought for Alpha)?

So the way I described above obviously is not that good?

So it has to be done only that way?
To update the portable version (Everything 1.4 or 1.5a):

Exit Everything (File -> Exit)
From the Start menu, search for:
services
Right click Services and click Run as administrator.
Right click Everything and click Stop. (if listed)
Right click Everything (1.5a) and click Stop. (if listed)
Replace your Everything.exe with the Everything.exe from the Everything 1.5b portable zip.
Launch Everything.exe.

No.
However, I recommend overwriting.

What is in this folder?

This:
Everything.lng
Everything.exe

Why do you ask?
Just to check if Everything 1.5b is loading the settings wrong file.
Everything 1.5b will load Everything.ini (if that doesn't exist, it will load Everything-1.5a.ini)
No Everything.ini seems odd.
It sounds like Everything 1.5b copied your settings, but not your database?
What is listed under %APPDATA%\Everything ?

What / why Beta version? Ah, there is no name anymore on the Everything window (like always before). It's now a Beta? The "a" kept (I thought for Alpha)?
Everything is now beta.

Terminate Everything.

Copy your %APPDATA%\Everything\Everything-1.5a.db to %APPDATA%\Everything\Everything.db
Restart Everything.

Thanks for the issue report Biff,

I found an issue with Everything 1.5b not using your Everything-1.5a.db

Please try the following:
Terminate Everything.
Update your Everything.exe with Everything-1.5.0.1411b

No Everything.ini seems odd.
But there was one. Everything.ini. And is again. And Everything-1.5a.ini still there.
It sounds like Everything 1.5b copied your settings, but not your database?
Still or again there. Everything.db exact same size like before removing it.
What is listed under %APPDATA%\Everything ?
Nothing, cannot find any Everything folder.

Ah, great, thank you! Done.
It is indexing now:

That is like it should be? I guess, yes. So every offline index gone now?
Copy your %APPDATA%\Everything\Everything-1.5a.db to %APPDATA%\Everything\Everything.db
Restart Everything.

Everything shouldn't be reindexing.

Please try the following:
Terminate Everything.
In Windows Explorer, type in the following address:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Everything

Rename your Everything.db to Everything-old.db
Rename your Everything.backup.db to Everything-old.backup.db
Update your Everything.exe with Everything-1.5.0.1411b
Run Everything.exe

Does the reindex persist?

In Everything, from the Help menu, click Troubleshooting information.

What is your Database location? eg: C:\users\your-username\appdata\local\Everything\Everything.db

I'm running the latest B release. In my services currently it still shows "Everything (1.5a)" with the path of:
"C:\Users\*****\Documents\Portable Apps\Everything-1.5.0.1408a.x64\Everything.exe" -svc

I know the folder says Everything-1.5.0.1408a.x64, but I did replace the Everything.exe with the one from Everything-1.5.0.1410b.x64. I am running it in portable mode. When I ran it the first time it did have to do a rescan. I was not using any other plugins. So all I did was replace the app's .exe.

I just went into Tools / Options and I unchecked, rechecked "Everything Service" & "Run indexing process as administrator", clicked apply then ok.

Now the services shows "Everything" with the version portion dropped. Everything appears in working order, no pun intended. The scan took a bit but not too long. I've been curious how much memory would be used if I also indexed file content. I feel like that could be useful.

Lets say I do rescan and include file content, does this save as a file somewhere other than just in memory? I do see an option for database location though. Is it possible when using Everything and doing a typical search to exclude file content temporarily? I'm afraid there may be too many results. If there is a quick option to just do a normal search without content, it is evading me. I'm not sure what stuff I would exclude. I would have to think about it for awhile. I have 32GB of RAM and normally not using a whole lot. Is there a recommendation for the memory limit?

Sorry, how does one do that? It’s obviously not just renaming.

Right click your Everything-1.5a.db and click Copy.
Right click in an empty spot and click Paste.
Rename the copied Everything-1.5a - Copy.db to Everything.db
Relaunch Everything.exe
Does the reindexing persist?

Installing the Everything 1.5b service should clear the Everything 1.5a service.

The content and property index is stored in your Everything.db
Please copy your Everything-1.5a.db to Everything.db before starting Everything.exe. (terminate Everything if its already running)

If you set a database location, Everything 1.5b does not automatically copy Everything-1.5a.db to Everything.db

@void

If content has been indexed, is it possible to turn it off temporarily for a search? Or does it need to be disabled? I can only imagine it'll take a long time to index the content

Currently Everything is showing 1,873,881 items @ 29.1TB. But yeah, curious if there's a toggle or something to not include content for searches as I think I would use it, but not for every search I want to do if that makes sense.

Everything will only search content if you include content: in your search.

So I have to rename the Everything-1.5a.backup.db to Everything-1.5a.db? Or just copy and overwrite the old exe with the new version (like usual): https://www.voidtools.com/Everything-1. ... 1b.x64.zip? Or keep the old Everything-1.5a.db?

No need if Everything 1.5b is loading without reindexing.
You're all set.

Please consider making a backup of your Everything-1.5a.db
Everything-1.5a.db and Everything-1.5a.backup.db can be deleted.

Or just copy and overwrite the old exe with the new version
Please optionally replace your Everything.exe with the latest portable beta.

I'm not following. All the options under the search tab don't mention it. Such as match case, match whole words, match prefix, etc, and the file types.

To bypass your content index, please prefix your content: search with fromdisk:

For example:

fromdisk:content:"my content search"

from-disk:

Everything 1.5.0.1412b will now copy your Everything 1.5a database when using a custom database location or multi-user database filename.

@Biff, you're all good, nothing to update here.
