Hello,
I am experiencing recurring freezes in Everything on this PC. The application becomes “Not Responding,” sometimes recovers after a while, and then freezes again when I interact with the results.
The issue occurred with Everything 1.4.1.1032 x64 and still occurs with Everything 1.5.0.1424b Beta x64.
In the current beta, I selected the startup indexing option described as recommended, which runs the indexing process with administrator privileges. The application still becomes unresponsive. I am paraphrasing the option because I use the Korean UI.
System
- Windows 11 Pro 25H2, 64-bit — OS build 26200.9711
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 8 cores / 16 logical processors
- RAM: 32 GB
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
Symptoms
- A narrow search such as notepad.exe successfully displayed results and remained responsive.
- With search-as-you-type enabled, trying to type ts caused Everything to freeze after the first character, t. The same happened when trying to type op: it froze after o.
- Enabling “hide results when the search is empty” prevented results from appearing with an empty query, but did not prevent freezing once I started typing.
- After disabling search-as-you-type and submitting ts with Enter, it still froze.
- On that occasion, it eventually recovered, but selecting results caused it to freeze again. For example, I could select one folder, then it froze when I tried to select another. This freeze/recovery cycle repeated.
- This involves ordinary selection, not just opening files or right-clicking.
Troubleshooting performed
Most of the following tests were performed on 1.4.1.1032:
- Uninstalled and reinstalled Everything. Before reinstalling, the standard Everything settings/database folders in Roaming and Local AppData were confirmed absent.
- Disabled automatic inclusion of new volumes and indexed C: only. D: was excluded, and no folder indexes were configured.
- Initially suspected the Google Drive virtual G: drive, but the captured indexing log showed C: only.
- Disabled icon shell extensions using /icon_shell_extensions=0. I also repeated the test after a normal exit and restart to preserve the setting. The issue persisted.
- Changed sorting from Run Count to Name.
- Disabled search-as-you-type and tested submitting a complete query.
- The preview pane was disabled.
What the 1.4 debug logs showed
The initial C: index contained approximately 256,448 folders and 729,346 files. Database creation completed in about 2.13 seconds, sorting completed, and approximately 985,794 results were reported.
The logs continued past indexing and initial filesystem-change processing. They did not identify a specific file or a clear cause of the freeze.
During some freezes, the UI process continued consuming CPU and its memory usage increased; one observation reached approximately 3.4 GB. The logs alone were insufficient to determine whether this was a search-thread, result-display, or other issue.
Google Drive and OneDrive shell-extension DLLs were observed loaded in the process, but there is no evidence that either caused the problem.
I used OpenAI Codex with the GPT-6 Astra model to assist with troubleshooting, reading local settings, and reviewing debug logs. The observations above are separated from possible explanations; no root cause has been confirmed.
Are there any known issues that match this behavior? What would be the most useful next diagnostic step on 1.5.0.1424b—a verbose debug log, a process dump captured while frozen, or another diagnostic?
Thank you.

There seems to be a few tools that are trying to pull every single item from Everything.

My first thought was icon shell extensions, but you've already tried:

- Wait for the Everything UI to hang.
- Download Process Explorer from Microsoft:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer - In Process Explorer, select Everything.exe (If there is two, select the one using the most memory)
- Right click Everything.exe and under Create Dump, select Create Mini Dump.
- Choose a filename and click Save.
- Please upload this file in a bug report
