A Request to Keep Your App’s Legacy Alive

Post by MonteNegro »

Dear David Carpenter,

Your work is excellent. I’ve been using your app for nearly ten years, and I’ve recommended it to my colleagues—many of whom now use it as well. In my view, it is one of the best apps in its field.

Many successful applications, such as VLC media player, Notepad++, 7-Zip, and AB Download Manager, are open source under the GPL. Operating systems such as Linux also show how a worldwide community can help a project continue to thrive. Even if the original developers are no longer able to maintain it, others may be able to carry the work forward.

I also believe that making your app open source could help it reach even more people. Users of Linux, macOS, and Android often have fewer options for apps of this kind, and many would welcome a high-quality alternative like yours. With an open-source community contributing to its development, the app could serve users across these platforms and continue to grow.

None of us knows what the future holds. By making your app open source, you could help ensure it remains available and useful for years to come. You would be creating a legacy that could live on for decades. We were young when we first started using your app, and as time passes, we hope the work you created will continue to serve others.

Thank you for everything you’ve built and for the years of work you’ve given to your users. I sincerely hope you’ll consider making the app open source so its community can help keep it alive.

Kind regards,
Daniel Schneider
