I’m using Everything 1.5.0.1423b (64-bit beta) and have a question about the container-file-count: search function.
The documentation says:
container-file-count:
Matches container files (such as .zip, .rar, and .7z) with the specified number of files.
However, when I check the Container File Count column for some ZIP files, the numbers seem larger than the actual file count, especially for archives with deep folder structures.
My questions:
Does container-file-count: count only files inside the archive, or does it also include directory entries (folders)?
If it includes directories, is there any way to get a count of files only (excluding folders) for container files?
If it should be files only, could this be a bug or a misunderstanding on my side?
Example scenario:
A ZIP with 10 files and 5 folders shows Container File Count = 15 (hypothetically).
Another ZIP with 10 files and 0 folders shows Container File Count = 10.
I’d like to confirm the exact behavior and whether there’s a supported way to count only files inside archives.
Does container-file-count: count only files inside the archive, or does it also include directory entries (folders)?

Re: Does container-file-count: count only files inside the archive, or does it also include directory entries (folders)?
Everything counts files and folders in zip files.
I'll update the documentation.
Everything uses the total central directory records in the zip header for the file count.
The file count can vary.
It will depend on if there's a central directory record for the folder or not.
For example, there might be a central directory record for:
foo/
foo/bar.txt
=Everything reports 2 files
or just a record for:
foo/bar.txt
=Everything reports 1 file
There's no option to get the just the file count or just the folder count.

edit:
Folders in zip files end with /
It's possible to get just the file count with:

It's possible to get just the file count with:
Code: Select all
*.zip add-column:a a:=$container-file-count:-STRINGCOUNT($container-filenames:,"/;")-REGEXMATCH($container-filenames:,"/$")-

A possible solution(workaround) is to extract any archives you find temporarily, then export them with whatever format. EFU works best with EBV but doesn't export date accessed. Though I've seen you can disable date accessed in a debloat windows 11 tool so maybe some don't even have that time system.
Then you can search that normally.
This could be done on an old SSD you have no use for anymore.
Or HDD..But I had SSD in mind as that's what I do it with. I don't have a useless enough HDD to warrant wasting it.
I doubt there is a way to search in archives otherwise, or it's bothersome.
Doesn't work so well for larger archives where you might not have the space to extract.
Maybe there is a separate tool one could use to export in a format close enough to the efu format that you could then edit that to work for EBV. Idk any.
But if it's archives you make, making an efu before deleting any files would give you the same thing.
For archives you download you'd have to extract them.
I export before I make archives and then I base the name of the archive on the name for the exports, though I only started in late 2024 IIRC.
Better late than never.

It looks like this
CL9 is compression level 9 in 7-Zip(slowest), 12GB for the memory thing, 1000M size separation and N-S Non-Solid with the other usual one being S16 or S16GB for Solid 16GB. This is just to know more about them in searching, over leaving all that info dark or only in the archive's own data."2026-09-28 0735-0743 M2 1.5.0.1423b - KWvoidtoolsKWebvKWefu - 0743 Archiving the entire NTA cause it only has these sub-folders, including a new one.efu"

Re: Does container-file-count: count only files inside the archive, or does it also include directory entries (folders)?
Hi void,
Thank you for the formula for ZIP files:
*.zip add-column:a a:=GETPROPERTY($filename:,"containerfilecount")-STRINGCOUNT(GETPROPERTY($filename:,"containerfilenames"),"/;")-REGEXMATCH(GETPROPERTY($filename:,"containerfilenames"),"/$")
This works perfectly for .zip files — column A shows only the number of files (folders excluded).
However, when I apply the same logic to RAR and 7z using:
ext:zip;rar;7z add-column:a a:=GETPROPERTY($filename:,"containerfilecount")-STRINGCOUNT(GETPROPERTY($filename:,"containerfilenames"),"/;")-REGEXMATCH(GETPROPERTY($filename:,"containerfilenames"),"/$")
I get different behavior:
For .zip files: column A correctly shows files only (folders excluded).
For .rar and .7z files: column A still shows files + folders (i.e., the folder count is not being subtracted correctly).
It seems that the way folders are represented in containerfilenames might be different for RAR and 7z compared to ZIP.
Could you please advise:
1. Do RAR and 7z archives also use trailing / for folder entries in containerfilenames, exactly like ZIP?
2. If not, what is the correct way to detect and subtract folder entries for RAR and 7z?
3. And For example, in Advanced Renamer
\1 _[$container-file-count:]
to append the total container entry count (files + folders) to the filename, e.g. archive _[123].
But I want to use the file-only count from column A (the formula result) instead of $container-file-count:.
How can I reference the value from custom column A (or the formula result) inside the Advanced Renamer pattern, so that I can do something like: archive _[file-only count]
or any equivalent syntax that uses the “files only” count in the _[...] part?
Is there a supported way to use a custom formula / custom column value in the Advanced Renamer, or do I need to use a different approach?
Thank you again for your help.

Re: Does container-file-count: count only files inside the archive, or does it also include directory entries (folders)?
Unfortunately, they do not.1. Do RAR and 7z archives also use trailing / for folder entries in containerfilenames, exactly like ZIP?
RAR also uses backslashes instead of forward slashes.
Everything shows the container filenames as they are in the archive.
(it doesn't add trailing slashes or convert slashes)
Unfortunately, Everything doesn't have a way to detect the true file count for RAR and 7z.2. If not, what is the correct way to detect and subtract folder entries for RAR and 7z?
3. And For example, in Advanced Renamer
Code: Select all
<EVAL:$container-file-count:-<STRINGCOUNT:$container-filenames:,"/;">-<REGEXMATCH:$container-filenames:,"/$">>
