Shortcuts for easier viewing in smaller window

Post by vertigo »

I like to use Everything in a fairly small window so it's unobtrusive and allows me to drag things from it into various other programs easily without having to constantly move things around. This means, though, that I have very limited horizontal space for the various columns (name, path, etc) and the preview pane, which results in not always being able to see all the columns I'd like and having to keep the preview pane very narrow, just enough to get effectively a postage stamp sized preview for most things, and text gets 1-2 words per line. This means having to scroll back and forth sometimes to see the other columns or maximizing the window temporarily in order to see them or to get a bigger preview, but sometimes I just want a quick look without having to do that.

Regarding the preview, a keyboard shortcut which would make the preview larger, either by extending it left, outside its pane, and into the results pane, or by extending it to the right outside of the borders of Everything in a pop-up, would work well for this. The obvious things would be alt+p (though that toggles the preview pane, but maybe it could be an option to do this instead, or toggle the pane if the focus is in the search bar and toggle the enlarged preview if the focus is in the results), ctrl+p (opens options currently), ctrl+alt+p (would work but more cumbersome), right arrow (currently just moves between columns), or shift+arrow or ctrl+arrow.

While I at least would like the ability to do this on an individual file basis (i.e. select a file, hit the shortcut, select another file and the preview reverts to normal), I'd also really like to be able to toggle it on and off, so I can leave it off most of the time, keeping the preview limited to its pane, but toggle it on when desired and go through the list, having every file's preview extended out (this would only really work if it extended out to the right, outside Everything's borders, which seems like the best approach). And for a real toggle, vs something that's activated for each file individually every time it's needed, it makes more sense to use something like ctrl/alt+p or ctrl+alt+p.

As for the columns, as mentioned, you can arrow right/left through them, but this could be improved/expanded upon. For starters, instead of having to hit right multiple times (or hold it down while it goes through all the columns), ctrl/alt/shift+right/left could jump to the far right/left, like home/end jumps to the top/bottom. The different modifiers could even act in different ways, with one just scrolling, one scrolling while temporarily resizing the left columns to keep them in view but taking up less space so the right columns can be viewed (this way you can still see at least part of the filenames/paths/etc to be able to keep track of what you're looking at, and the column widths would return to normal when scrolling back to the left), and one could extend the list out in the same way as with the preview as described above.

Bookmarks are powerful and can be used to toggle/set the window state.

To toggle the preview pane on the right and extend the window size use the following bookmark search:

Code: Select all

/window_wide=preview_visible?window_wide-128-6:window_wide+128+6
/preview_side=1
/right_sidebar_wide=128
/preview_visible=!preview_visible
An un-dockable (floating) preview pane is on my TODO list.
