Made an Android app for searching my PC with Everything (open source)

Post by mickeyperry »

Hey,

Been using Everything for years and always wanted a way to grab files off my PC from my phone without firing up TeamViewer or digging through SMB shares. So I made a little Android app that talks to Everything's HTTP server.

You just point it at your PC's IP and port, and you get the usual instant-as-you-type search on your phone. Tap a result to download it, or hit play on a video and it opens in VLC/MX Player and streams right off your PC, seeking and all. That part was surprisingly annoying to get right (players won't do basic auth themselves, and they choke on the encoded UNC paths the HTTP server uses for network folders), so the app quietly proxies the stream for them.

Works with 1.4 and 1.5a, over LAN or Tailscale. Search syntax is whatever Everything supports since it just passes the query through.

It's free and open source, APK is on the releases page: https://github.com/mickeyperry/EverythingDroid

Still rough in places but works well for me. Happy to hear if anything's broken for you.

And obviously thanks to David, Everything is the first thing I install on any PC.

Just install the ftp plugin in everything, install termux or total commander on your android, configure the connection to your pc from your phone, and boom. No bespoke app needed.
