Version numbering stuck at 1.5.0.1390a ?

Post by Arbie »

This must have been described somewhere and is normal, but I can't find mention of it.

The latest version of Everything v1.5 Alpha is dated 19 June 2025. When I download "Everything-1.5.0.1396a.x64.zip" (non-installer) the extracted file is Everything.exe with CRC-32 of 40FD3328. When I execute that file it runs fine but the title bar and About box still show ver "1.5.0.1390a".

The only difficulty this causes me is that over the years I've had Everything portable in many locations on my PC with many shortcuts to it. So I'd like to be able to trust the title bar and About for assurance that I'm actually running the latest. In fact checking for this is the only reason I noticed it.

However, as noted, this may be intentional and I'm fine with that too.

Thanks for the magnificent tool (and yes I've put some dollars behind that a few times though hardly its true value to me).

Thank you for your feedback.

Only one instance of Everything can run at a time.
Exit Everything first (File -> Exit)
Then run the exe from Everything-1.5.0.1396a.x64.zip
Does the version still show 1390a?

Having many shortcuts to Everything.exe should be fine.
You may run into troubles if you have many Everything.exe files.
If possible, try to have only one portable Everything.exe file.
Exit Everything (File -> Exit) and replace this Everything.exe with the latest.

Stop the Everything Service if you have trouble replacing your Everything.exe:
Start -> Services -> Everything Service -> Stop
-or-
Task Manager -> Services -> Everything Service -> Stop
-Stopping the service can be done as a standard user.
-Everything will restart the Service automatically when started.

If you want to run multiple versions, please use multiple instances.

All is OK - I apparently left v1390 running when I checked for an update.

So I downloaded v1396, renamed the v1390 exe to "OLD" and ran the new one. And up popped the v1390 window! But it couldn't be running, because not only had I changed the exe name, but Windows Task Manager "Process" window showed only one Everything task, which "had" to be the new one.

Now I realize that (a) Everything doesn't mind what you do to its .exe after it's started; and (b) In Task Mgr only the "Details" window will show multiple distinct programs if they have the same name.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I'm sorry to have taken so much of your time on nothing.
