I've had a useful brainwave...
I usually have the folderbar arranged so I see the twig folders properly. I'm sure that's a normal approach.
Often I need to resize the results list to maximise what I can see there, so I drag the separator left and the folderbar gets smaller.
But in getting smaller, the folderbar is trimmed on the right and the result is you then have to do a second process of sliding the folderbar scrollbar the corresponding amount to make the twig folders viewable again.
My suggestion is that if you had a modifier-drag of the separator - for example shift-drag - then in moving its position, the folderbar is slid the same amount left or right with it, so that the twig folder display is unchanged and the trimming is effectively done on the parental left of the folderbar, not at the child twigs of the right.
People could then drag or shift-drag the separator according to their needs in resizing.
This would be helpful for many resizes per day, as it's a constant juggle focussing on seeing the folders and focussing on the results pane by increasing it.
Parallel to this idea (which leaves the folder names visible but reduced) it would also be useful to have a command that toggles the folderbar to a hidden but active state - shrunk to minimum width or entirely (ideally) hidden but still active (closing it loses its active state) - and back to the width when you last used the toggle. This would mean a shortcut could alternate between seeing the folders and maximising the results list by hiding the folders. It may be there's a fancy way to partially do this already but a simple command would be ideal.

I will consider a modifier to anchor the folder sidebar to the right when resizing.
Thank you for the suggestions.
/show-folders-sidebar
/left_sidebar_wide 0
Optionally bind a keyboard shortcut.
