Hi,
I tried using Everything (on default search settings) to find Outlook.exe on a Windows 10 PC.
It found it in one location, the results of which I used to create a firewall rule. The rule didn't work which set me off on a long debug process.
It turned out that I had two outlook.exe files on my system but Everything stubbornly only reported on one of them.
The file it couldn't find was in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16
Eventually, I decided to rebuild the search index and it was then able to find it.
So, my question is, as it is impossible to know what Everything doesn't know (in terms of index search results), how confident can I be that Everything is always searching 100% of my files? Should I periodically rebuild the search index to avoid issues like I had today?
Update: I'm actually typing this on another pc where I also have Outlook installed. Everything couldn't find it on this PC either. In fact, I tried a few other files in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16 and it can't find any of them.
Any insight into what's going on would be much appreciated. I can't help wonder if there is some silly oversight on my part.
Everything version is 1.4.1.1024 (x64) on Win10. Search settings are default afaik.
Everything can't find a file that I know exists
Re: Everything can't find a file that I know exists
Outlook.exe is a hard link.
EVerything 1.4 doesn't track changes to hard links.
Please try forcing a rebuild:
Everything 1.5 will track changes to hardlinks.

Thanks for the quick and helpful reply.
I wasn't aware of this constraint.
The rebuild fixed the issue however I'll start using Everything 1.5 as that seems to be the long term strategic solution.
Thank you.
