Using Everything like a normal File Manager

Post by polarity »

Hey folks,
I'm enjoying using Everything, and it serves me well.

But sometimes, I just want to dive into and out of directories like I used to in Windows Explorer and see the contents. Double-click in, ".." or "up arrow," double-click out.

At the moment, double-clicking in Everything opens the regular Windows Explorer (which I don't like), and diving into a subdirectory in Everything requires me to right-click and choose "open in Everything 1.5" somewhere down the list.

I also tried using the "Folders" sidebar, but it doesn't really work well with the concept of Everything (it adds to the search query).

Is there any way to get this kind of behavior in Everything without using key commands?

Thanks in advance!

Thank you for your feedback Robert,

Everything is not a file manager.

I am considering an option to expand folders inline. (click a + on the left of a folder in the main result list to show the subfolders/files)

David, Please enable double-clicking to open folders in Explorer (optional in advanced settings), as it would greatly improve navigation and locating large files. Right-clicking and selecting from the menu becomes tedious with deep file structures, Even assigning a keyboard shortcut like "E" to that isn't as intuitive as the usual double-clicking to enter a folder. So please consider making this possible, or maybe to assign a default option from the menu to double-clicking.

It would also be very helpful to optionally include the "." and ".." entries for quick parent folder access, with possibility to assign shortcuts for both. While I know Everything isn't meant to replace Explorer or other file managers, it's better at pinpointing space hogs and sorting folders by size, making exploration intuitive and straightforward.

I will consider a double click option.

I have put on my TODO list to add a keyboard command to open the folder in Explorer.
(The default should be Ctrl+Enter like in the result list)

Thank you for the suggestion.

Everything 1.5.0.1392a adds a hard-coded Ctrl + Enter key binding to open the current folder-sidebar folder in Windows Explorer.

I'm happy that Everything doesn't call hardcoded Explorer.
So better wording:
It opens the current folder-sidebar in Windows Explorer or your File Manager.
Everything uses the API for folders, so it opens Total Commander in my case.
This is also possible with many other 3rd party file managers.
