Offline volumes were removed from shown list against chosen settings

Post by Thy Grand Voidinesss »

Just a couple of days ago, my two backup off-line drives were still being correctly included i.e. they were showing grayed-out items, as they were not connected. But today I spotted that their items were all gone from the list. Re-opening Everything and resetting system did not help. So I checked my settings - and they still were set to

Tools > Options... > Indexes > NTFS > Automatically remove offline volumes > OFF
Tools > Options... > Indexes > NTFS > Automatically remove offline volumes > [Local NTFS volumes] > Include in database > ON

thus setup as intended by me a long time ago

After having reconnected the first drive, its items almost immediately became shown on the list in a normal way i.e. not grayed out - while after disconnecting it they now become also correctly grayed out. Also closing and re-opening now of Everything and resetting of system does not affect this. So it fixed itself entirely

The second drive also started to behave like the first one i.e. in accordance with the above settings - but there was one slight difference: after its initial re-connection it started to index itself (and still is because it is a 22TB HDD)

So what could have caused such peculiar and dichotomous behavior? That second drive was not treated with a
chkdsk
by me, so it did not have its Journal rebuilt- at least not that I am aware of. And why would they both not as much as disappear from my database but merely become hidden, if the pre-chosen settings prohibited them from doing so?

It is my sad experience, that recently after activating Storage Spaces with integrity streams for some other 2 drives of mine (arrayed into 1 volume for master work), on my brand new hardware I started experiencing issues with devices connected both via USB back panel slots, USB monitor slots connected via mobo internal slot, and SATA internal slots - but this should not be the cause, right? Because when drive is disconnected / removed in whatever way, then as long as it becomes reconnected automatically under its old volume letter it should not be viewed by Everything as new volume

A few days ago I updated to using Everything 1.5.0.1404a x64 Portable. I am running on Windows 10 IOT Enterprise LTSC 21H2 x64 [19044.6575]

It says

Code: Select all

Last rebuild reason: Out of date NTFS volume C: is available
(But between previous post and this one I manually re-indexed my online non-system drive, because its lost its Display Name property)

What is the maximum USN Journal size on your C: drive?
(the maximum USN Journal size is shown under Tools -> Options -> NTFS -> C: -> maximum USN Journal size)

Please try upping the maximum size to: 131072 KB

It was set to 32768

So what now? I changed it to 131072 - and am suppose to observe if items from all of my monitored volumes will remain on the list in main window? If yes- then for my report to be reliable this will take months (assuming no new disappearance occurs)

In a past few days I have been cleaning my backup drives and now I plan to re-index them from scratch, because the changes I made on them are huge. But first I will deal with this viewtopic.php?p=80423#p80423 (which eagerly awaited by me update I have somehow missed)

Changing to 131072 KB should help prevent the rebuild from
Out of date NTFS volume C: is available
.

If you notice volumes are missing again, please report your Tools -> Debug -> Statistics -> Build -> Last Rebuild Reason.
If Everything is throwing out the offline volumes, the reason will be reported in your Last Rebuild Reason.
