Hello,
First of all, thank you for Everything. It is one of the very few modern tools that truly respects speed, simplicity and focus.
I am a long-time PC user (since MS-DOS era) and I would like to share an idea, not as nostalgia, but as a usability suggestion.
In the past, tools like Magellan or Norton Commander allowed not only to find files, but also to:
- quickly preview file content (especially text files)
- understand the file context (where it lives in the directory tree)
- explore information without opening heavy applications
Everything already does the hardest part perfectly: instant search.
What could be interesting (as an optional expert mode) would be:
- a lightweight text preview panel (for txt, csv, log, sql, source code)
- basic contextual information about the selected file
- keyboard-oriented navigation
This would not turn Everything into a file manager, but would enhance its role as an information exploration tool.
Just an idea from an experienced user who really appreciates your work.
Thank you for keeping Everything simple and fast.
Best regards
Suggestion: optional “Magellan-like” expert mode for Everything

Thank you for your feedback MarcelO,
Everything uses the system preview handler, which can be changed.
Right click the file and click Open Path to open the file location in your default file browser.
Everything 1.5 will have a folders sidebar.
A details pane is on my TODO list.
Everything uses the system context menu for files, which can be customized to add options to open files in a lighter application.
Thank you for the suggestion.
