"Preferred" Folders - Opposite of Exclusions.

Post by ShadowTiger »

(I did my best to search if this was already a suggestion. Forgive me if it's been suggested already.)

Quick Summary: This idea involves having a preferred folder to search in, where it's assumed other folders don't matter. This is great for quickly searching through a "Memes" folder or something, especially when you don't want to keep adding the folder path into a filter. It's just too much to type.

Because: Typically, not everyone will learn all of the very useful exclusion filters to type in the search bar in order to focus on a specific folder or area. Or maybe they just don't know how to use those filters, or not to include multiple locations. They just want to type "fish" into the search bar to find the image they want, but they also know it's likely in a meme folder. They don't want to search through a whole list of other paths, but also don't want to set a lot of exclusions in the Exclude list just in case future searches want to search in those other areas you would've excluded.

What it will do: This is basically a copy and paste of the "Exclude" area in the Settings region, except instead of removing a folder from the search index, what it will do is "pin" everything in the files in the preferred paths to the top of the search results bar, and will become its own region by which to sort through in terms of date, alphabetically, size, type, etc.

So if I have a meme where all I remember is the word "the" nobody will need to scroll down to their C:\Users\TurtleneckMaster\Pictures\Memes folder in the very, very long path and isolate it, and will not need to enter a filter for that long path, or will have to go to that path in Windows Explorer to copy and paste it in order to add it to the filter in the search bar. The preferred path will already be right there by default, because that's how the user uses Everything.

Thank you for your post ShadowTiger,

Please try a Memes filter:
In Everything, from the Search menu, click Add to filters....
Change the filter Name to:
Memes

Change the filter Search to:
"C:\Users\TurtleneckMaster\Pictures\Memes\"

Change the filter Macro to:
memes

Click OK.

Filters can be activated from the Search menu, Filter bar (View -> Filter Bar), Filter sidebar (View -> Filters), right clicking the status bar, filter macro (
memes:
) or filter keyboard shortcut.
Filters can be organized from Search menu -> Organize filters.

Set the default filter under Tools -> Options -> Home -> Filter.

Fascinating. I thank you for the idea. It's a great way to filter down to a single folder, but is it possible to filter down to several folders at once, though? I see that only one filter can be selected at a time.

Everything really on has one active filter.

Everything 1.5 will have support for selecting multiple filters and a folders sidebar which might help.

You can set your filter to search multiple locations, as an example:

In Everything, from the Search menu, click Add to filters....
Change the filter Name to:
Memes & Gifs

Change the filter Search to:
"C:\Users\TurtleneckMaster\Pictures\Memes\" | "C:\Users\TurtleneckMaster\Pictures\gifs\"

Change the filter Macro to:
memesgifs

Click OK.
