Questions:-
(1) Have I gone about this the correct way?
(2) If not, is there a better way?
(3) Am I correct in asserting that my resulting list of players is not necessarily exhaustive?
(4) In my example above, I am at the mercy of the authours of the programs in their descriptive text, correct?
I use the filter "Executable" and find 16,000+ items. Searching for c: returns 15,000 items, so I elect to search all drives (16,000+ executable files). "All drives" because over the years I might have added some stand-alone executable files to my data partition.
Of all those executable files, which ones are audio players?
"Winamp.exe" is well known to me, and the search for WinAmp turns up my Winamp.BAT file.
ext:exe winampMy bolded text above could be replaced by the question "which ones are picture editors (of JPEG files), and the entire idea could be expanded to whatever you seek in a file. The file target might NOT be executable, but I have to start somewhere ...
I add a column, choosing "Program" from the left pane and "Description" from the right pane.
Sorting the column takes about five minutes, but no matter. I really want a better player (or jukebox or ...)(you really want a better graphics editor)(he really wants a better type of music, such as SONATAS) and so on. About one-third of the executable files have a null/empty description.
I search the exported FileList CSV text file (attached) and find several strings "player" in the CSV file, so I believe I am on the right track.
I can expand my synonyms to include "jukebox", "audio", and other suggested synonyms. (gramola, máquina, karussell, musikbox , ...)
Again, I am not looking for a "Thanks, I'll put this on the ToDo list", but would like to know more about Properties, and in particular the "Description".
Thanks, Chris
