Indexing vs Index?
Indexing vs Index?
How is checking on "No NTFS indexing" different from UNchecking "Automatically index fixed NTFS volumes"?
Re: Indexing vs Index?
No NTFS indexing
Disables NTFS indexing of system volumes. (where Windows is installed)
Non-system volumes can still be indexed. (eg: removable drives)
The Everything Service is not installed.
The "Automatically index fixed NTFS volumes setting" is ignored.
Volumes must be manually indexed.
System volumes cannot be indexed.
Useful if you just want to index non-system volumes. (eg: just a network share)
This will be renamed to Manual Configuration in the next version of Everything.
Automatically index fixed NTFS volumes
Installs the Everything service.
Allows you to manually choose which volumes to index.
System volumes can be indexed.
Useful if you just want to index C: and nothing else.

Re: Indexing vs Index?
Thank you. The language and position is very confusing. Since they are related, I'd like to suggest you put both options on the same installer-screen, like this:
- Enable Everything Indexing Service
-- Index System Volume (where Windows is installed)
-- Index Non-Windows Volumes (Selectable)
- Enable Everything Indexing Service
-- Index System Volume (where Windows is installed)
-- Index Non-Windows Volumes (Selectable)
Re: Indexing vs Index?
Everything 1.5 will have:
- Enable Everything Indexing Service (recommended)
- Run indexing process as administrator
- Run as administrator
- Manual configuration
Checking Manual configuration will gray out "Automatically index fixed NTFS volumes setting" on the next page.
Thank you for the suggestion.
These settings can always be changed at any time from Tools -> Options -> General.
If you choose No NTFS indexing / Manual configuration and try to add an NTFS volume to your index, Everything will give you the option to install the service/run as admin.
