Index not updating

Post by Trevor22 »

Greetings,

My index stopped updating with new files added or modified. It does seem to update a few files that are added to single external volume (all volumes are NTFS), but that's all. I rebuilt the index and the recent files still do not show up in searches.

reinstalled Everything, and it still doesn't seem to work.

The Index tab setting under NTFS look okay.

I'm Using version 1.4.1.1017(x685)

Thanks in advance for help.

Please make sure Everything is installed correctly and running as a standard user:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.
Please try forcing a rebuild:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Indexes tab on the left.
  • Click Force Rebuild.
  • Click OK.
Please make sure no search options are checked under the Search menu (eg: uncheck match case, uncheck match whole words, uncheck regex)

Please make sure the Everything filter is active under the Search menu.

Please make sure these files are not excluded from Tools -> Options -> Exclude.

Does the issue persist?

I have the same problem, i.e. Everything stopped updating search results in real time. As to indexing in real time, one more remark: when I attach an external USB disc, whether previously indexed by Everything, or not, Everything starts indexing the disc just attached to my PC, and I consider it OK.

I open Everything as application when I need to search files. In addition, Everything is also running as service. All fields mentioned by you are tick-checked except "Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything". The latter is not tick-cheked because I want to have all Everything data, including its database, kept in the folder of the program, which I run as portable stored on an external USB disk attached to my PC at all times. The reason for such configuration is that I want to avoid data loss, should the main system disc crash.
Your advice will be welcome. ;)

Could you please send some debug output?
  • In Everything, type in the following search and press ENTER:
    /debug_log
  • Create a new file or change an existing file on one of your drives.
--please wait for 1 minute, this will ensure any found issues are captured in the log--
  • In Everything, From the File menu, click Exit.
  • Restart Everything.
  • Could you please send your %TEMP%\Everything Debug Log.txt to support@voidtools.com

Thanks for your reply, still more that you are busy with a commercial project. I keep my fingers crossed for the successful development of your project.
My problem has been saved as in the meantime I found an advice in the net: I ticked-off "Start ET with the system", reset the PC, then ticked-in the same option and again reset my PC. Since then ET has been working as expected. I do not know why, but the procedure helped to solve the problem. :)

However, as the forum is a public good, I understand that your further advice based on my log might occur helpful to other users, I may send you my log according to your advice. I am not sure, however, whether it will be suitable for you, because ET now works like a charm. Let me know, if my log might be suitable for you to provide a general advice to other users. Rgds.

I've been having this problem myself ever since I started running Everything as a service. The index updates for a while, but at some point it stops updating and changes in my file system stop being reflected, even if the Everything service is still shown as 'running'. Force Rebuild and restarting the service fixes this, but only temporarily. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening? Thanks!

I may help if you provide at least your Everything version and bitness.

Sorry I should have supplied that info —I'm running version 1.4.1.10296 64-bit (portable), but have had this problem with previous releases as well.

For understanding:
The service is not updating the index,
it's only used to provide the necessary rights avoiding UAC prompts.
The index update is made by the client running in the background.
This should be enabled in your settings (Start Everything with system startup)
If no more client is running in the background there will be no index updates.

Are you excluding any files/folders under Tools -> Options -> Exclude?

Once files/folders are excluded they will likely remain excluded until you force a rebuild.
-Please try disabling the exclude list and allow hidden/system files.

Are you including any specific folders under Tools -> Options -> NTFS -> select a drive -> Include only?

If the issue persists, please capture a debug log:
  • Wait for Everything to miss changes.
  • In Everything, type in the following search and press ENTER:
    /debug_log
  • Make a file system change that Everything misses (eg: make a new text document on the desktop)
  • Wait for 1 minute to capture any time-outs.
  • In Everything, type in the following search and press ENTER:
    /restart
  • Please upload your %TEMP%\Everything Debug Log.txt in a bug report.

I exclude two folders, namely, the recycle bin and a folders on my system partition that contain a lot of temp files and other miscellaneous junk I don't need to see. What I was referring to was Everything missing obvious file system changes, such as a file I've just created, renamed, moved or deleted myself. Right now it's still working correctly. I'll check later today and will generate the bug report and share it.

For the record, up until yesterday I had the option 'Compress database' enabled. I read a post that recommended unchecking that to speed up start-up and exiting, and it worked. I note it here in case that was a contributing factor.
