New tab coming from an intensive sort

Post by meteorquake »

I had a selection sorted by image dimensions
When I did Ctrl-T to make a new tab it basically froze up for a while because it had copied the sort and tried to apply it to all files.
Can I suggest that only fast sorts be copied through onto a new tab.

This issue should be fixed in Everything 1.5.0.1397a.

What version of Everything are you using? (Help -> About Everything)

I think 1399 is an improvement, you can break out of it after about 1.5 secs, but the new tab opens blank - even the folder tree is not populated - because of the sort that will take forever, so it gives a very stuck feel.
It's certainly a conundrum that opening a new tab with a million files on you are probably not wanting an intensive sort to be copied, but equally maybe you are going to go on to type something that reduces it to a few.
The problem seems to remain therefore that anyone who doesn't know what's happening will just see it open blank, and even for someone that does, there's a psychological "feel" that the program is doing an enormous amount of unwanted work, which takes a little bit to break out of...
My own resolution would be to never copy non-basic sorts to a new tab, as this will save confusion for those who don't understand what's happening; so that if people want a new tab with the same sort they could just duplicate the tab and adjust from there, or otherwise home in from the new tab and re add the sort.

Thanks for checking 1399a meteorquake,

The sort should revert to a fast sort.

I haven't been able to reproduce the issue my end..
Maybe there's another setting coming into play..

Could you please send a debug log:
  • In Everything, search for some images and sort by dimensions.
  • From the Tools menu, under the Debug Submenu, click Start Debug Logging...
  • Create a new tab (Ctrl + T)
  • Cancel the sort.
  • From the Tools menu, under the Debug Submenu, click Stop Debug Logging...
--this will open your %TEMP%\Everything Debug Log.txt in Notepad.
  • Please upload this file in a bug report.
