New 1.5 Alpha, 1397 a, generic task bar icon

Post by abr01 »

Instead of having the usual orange colored magnifier glass, there's only a white sheet generic icon in the taskbar. This may be a glitch.

Hi,

Everything Options - 1.5.0.1397a (x64) > tray_icon_filename > Value for tray_icon_filename: ...

Did you perhaps enter a name there?
Then you get a view like the one you described.

Please see:

You probably still have the icon from the previous version 1.5.0.1396a in your taskbar.
You will need to remove this and pin the new icon from version 1.5.0.1397a to your taskbar.

In the "Icon Customization" link, it points out the .ico (or an .ico) could be located in any number of places.
Perhaps you have a (old "not used") .ico in one of them, that never affected things before, though now may?

Thanks guys. But how would i pin it to the taskbar? I quick search brought up nothing related to everything. Can't find the spot in the settings either.

That doesn't work for me, sorry. I have nothing but my Rainmeter modules on my desktop, not even the trash bin icon. I also don't want to have a permanent Everything icon in my taskbar. The way i'm using it, is to launch the program by a keyboard command, and when i close the window, the icon disappears. But okay, It's not a big deal. I'd rather leave it like i have it now. Maybe some future version will pick up the proper icon, without having to pin it to the desktop. Thanks!

Please try unpinning Everything and re-pining Everything to your taskbar:
  • Right click the Everything task bar button with a generic icon and click Unpin from taskbar.
  • Does Everything now appear in the task bar with the correct icon?
  • Right click the Everything task bar button and click Pin to taskbar.

Please check the pinned shortcut:
  • Right click the pinned Everything taskbar button and right-click Everything.
  • Click Properties.
  • Is the correct icon shown in the Properties window?
  • Please check the target is correct, it should look like:
    "C:\Program Files\Everything 1.5a\Everything.exe" -is-relaunch-command
  • Click OK.

Please try rebuilding icon cache:

From the Start menu, type in the following search:

cmd

Right click Command prompt and click Run as Administrator.

In the command prompt, navigate to local app data folder by typing in the following and pressing enter:

cd %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

Remove the hidden attribute from the icon cache database by typing the following and pressing enter:

attrib iconcache*.db -h

Terminate Windows Explorer by typing the following and pressing enter:

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe

Delete the icon cache database by typing the following and pressing enter:

del iconcache*.db

Restart Windows Explorer by typing the following and pressing enter:

explorer

Sorry, both tipps didn't work so far, it seems to be a stubborn case. I also have tried some exe type IconCacheCleaner, same result. But there has been a change, nevertheless: the generic icon changed from the "document sheet" style (blank paper) to the one i have linked here below.

Thanks for checking.

Please try the following:
  • Exit Everything. (File -> Exit)
  • Unpin your Everything taskbar button
-Right-click the Everything taskbar button and click Unpin.
  • In Windows Explorer, type in the following address and press ENTER:
    %AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
  • Delete the Everything shortcut.
  • Launch Everything manually from
    C:\Program Files\Everything-1.5a\Everything.exe
  • Right click Everything in the taskbar and click Pin to taskbar.

Please make sure Everything is installed correctly:
  • Exit Everything. (File -> Exit)
  • Launch Everything manually from
    C:\Program Files\Everything-1.5a\Everything.exe
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • For any options that are square checked (), please make the tick-checked ().
  • Click OK.

A nuclear option is to delete all your pinned taskbar button information (not recommended):
  • Delete (or rename) the following registry key:
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband
  • Restart your PC.
  • This clears all pinned taskbar buttons and state

Well, no luck. Actually, i have not a single item pinned to my taskbar, except for the Windows Virtual Desktops one. Hence every programm that is running offers the "pin to the taskbar" option, rather than "unpin". The ET service is also in the right state, i don't see any square type checkbox.
I also tried disabling Windhawk (UI tweaks app), in case it would interfere in any way.

But don't bother please, i reverted to the previous version, and voilá, the icon is back again. So it's either some sort of Windows quirk, or something's changed along the way with the newer version. Other than that, Everything works absolutely fine. So i will skip the 1397 build, and retry with the next version or the Beta, once it's out. Thanks again to all of you!

I suspect the issue is caused by Everything64.exe being renamed to Everything.exe in 1397a.

If the issue persists in 1397 and later builds, please try copying your Everything.exe to Everything64.exe

If you are using any third party tools to setup your taskbar, please make sure they reference Everything.exe instead of Everything64.exe.

Not sure how to do this. I had the 1396 version installed, and the install folder contained both versions, Everything.exe, as well as Everything64.exe. Did you mean rename instead of copying?

Now i have reinstalled the 1397 version, but it gives me only the Everything.exe, now. But just renaming it adding the "64" results in the wrong icon again. And as for the taskbar settings, no special referencing is going on here.

Not sure how to do this.
- Copy Everything.exe from version 1.5.0.1397a to any temporary folder, e.g. Test.
- Rename the file from Everything.exe to Everything64.exe.
- Move the Everything64.exe file from the “Test” folder to the Everything program folder
and overwrite the existing Everything64.exe file there. Confirm the UAC prompt *).
- Restart Everything version 1.5.0.1397a -> start Everything for testing purposes with the file “Everything64.exe”!
- Delete your temporary folder, e.g. Test.

Like i said already, there IS no Everything64 in the first place, that i could overwrite from my test folder. The 1396 version creates both after install, but the 1397 does not. That's the problem. Also, the Everything-1.5.0.1397a.x64.zip standalone version contains only one version, the one without the "64" name part. Are you sure, that this installer is complete?

EDIT

Ok, i think i got it now. Having a look at the version column helped me to solve this issue. It was a bit confusing at first. Thanks again!

OK, then - just to be sure -
- delete Everything64.exe and Everything.exe - version 1.5.0.1396a in your program folder
- move the renamed Everything64.exe - version 1.5.0.1397a file from the “Test” folder to the Everything program folder
  and start it.

Please report whether the icon is now visible.

This is how I fixed the blank icon issue after updating.
  1. Right-click the Everything icon in the taskbar, then right-click Everything in the context menu and choose Properties.

Everything 1.5.0.1398a refreshes the relaunch app-id.

Does the blank icon persist with this version?

If you have Everything pinned to your taskbar, please re-pin Everything:
  • Right click the pinned Everything taskbar button and click Unpin from taskbar.
  • Right click the Everything taskbar button and click Pin from taskbar.

Everything Options - 1.5.0.1399a (x64) > UI > ✅ Show tray icon

Can you please also display Everything 1.5a in the tooltip for the tray icon (instead of: Everything) ?

What is your Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> taskbar_notification_title_format setting value?

Restart Everything if you change taskbar_notification_title_format
(File -> Exit)

The default value should be empty which will use
Everything (1.5)

Thanks for your response.

The "Value for taskbar_notification_title_format" = empty.

When I manually enter the value: Everything (1.5), the value appears in the tooltip.
Finally, I entered the value: Everything 1.5a, so everything is consistent.

Thank you for your support!

I'm guessing you have disabled the alpha instance (Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> alpha_instance)
-or-
You have made the NO_ALPHA_INSTANCE file in your Everything.exe location

In this case, the tray title would use "Everything" by default.

Ahh, I see.

C:\Everything\NO_ALPHA_INSTANCE

I am pleased that I can set the value myself.

Please consider using the title format:
Everything $v
if you want this to work for the beta release and future versions.

taskbar_notification_title_format

I have also removed the required restart after changing taskbar_notification_title_format for the next alpha update.

Thanks for this information!

I myself have also toyed with the idea of entering the ‘Everything’ version number in taskbar_notification_title_format.
