Indexing Contents - File Types Issue

Let me first state: Everything is a FANTASTIC piece of software - the wrtiters deserve a Nobel Prize and after we've given it to them we will whip the windows search programmers (naked) around the auditorium while singing whip-crack away. I am having trouble with searching file contents.

I have enabled content search - I have put in a limited number of ext's to search like this;
*.txt;*.xls;*.xlsx;*.xlsm;*.docx;*.doc (copied and pasted from everything)

I have only one folder to search;
E:\SEARCH_NOW (copied and pasted from everything)

I have these files in that folder;
TEST_SEARCH.doc
TEST_SEARCH.docx
TEST_SEARCH.xls
TEST_SEARCH.xlsx
TEST_SEARCH.xlsm
TEST_SEARCH.txt

The Everything query is:
content:"MoneyMoneyMoney"

The are 3 files returned;
TEST_SEARCH.doc
TEST_SEARCH.xls
TEST_SEARCH.txt

None of the new Excel or Word type formats are seen as having those words as contents.

If I turn on the 'Previewer' option - the xlsx file displays with the search term showing inside it (so presumably Everything can see inside the file - not sure how the previewer works) - It can also display the docx file but NOT the xlsm file (interesting maybe).

So to be 100% clear - only 3 files out of the 6 are returned as matches - Everything seems to be able to display (using Previewer) the contents of 5 out of 6 of the files.

This might all be ME !

Any help much appreciated.

Thank you for your feedback.

Please make sure you are using the x64 version of Everything (Help -> About Everything)

Please make sure Everything is not running as administrator.
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (from the File menu, click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.


If the issue persists, please upload your TEST_SEARCH.docx in a bug report.

Depending on your installed software, you may not have an active docx iFilter.
For me, it helped to install the following from Microsoft

Reply to Void and Horst.epp - thanks very much for replying I really appreciate the help.

I am away from the PC I was originally testing (and reporting from) but I have now tried with my own PC at home and these are the results - sorry for the delay in coming back, I wanted to test thoroughly abd repost accurately what I found.

This PC is running Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1 - the original PC was running an up to date version of Windows 11 (Pro ?) x64.
On this PC I have a test folder - E:\! ! SEARCH HERE - in it I have placed 6 files;
SEARCH.doc
SEARCH.docx
SEACRCH.xls
SEACRCH.xlsx
SEACRCH.xlsm
SEACRCH.txt

All the office file formats were created in Office Pro 2010 - the word file was created then saved with the two different file format types - ditto the Excel files. TXT was created in Notepad++.

5 of those files show up in the content search - all but the xlsm file.

I was running Everything 1391a x86 when I started today - none of the files were found - I uninstalled 1391a x86 and installed 1396a x64 and the the results were as stated above - 5 of the files are found. I installed the MS FilterPack64bit.exe - results are the same.

I was running the x86 version because I believed that when I started testing Everything 1.5, I noticed that the x86 builds seemed to require so much less memory than the x64 versions - I am not sure that 'seems' true with this build but that was my reasoning.

Does content indexing only work on the x64 version ?
Is a 64bit OS running a x86 Everything a bad mix ?

Anyway, it still misses the xlsm file for whatever reason, but I can see it does work as intended otherwise. Again, absolutely no cristism intended about any of this - Everything is fantastic - I only use about 1% of it's features and am trying to expand my knowledge.

I will test the other PC again when I am able but any further feedback would be most interesting.

This is true.
The x86 version uses less memory.

However, the x86 version is limited to 2GB of RAM and iFilters will be missing.

Does content indexing only work on the x64 version ?
While content indexing works on x86, you are limited to what iFilters are installed.
Normally, only x64 iFilters will be installed.


Is a 64bit OS running a x86 Everything a bad mix ?
No.
However, you may run into troubles with context menu shell extensions, icon handlers, thumbnail handlers, preview handlers and content handlers.



I wonder what is up with the xlsm file?
I can search xlsm files fine here (Windows 10 + Office 2016)
Maybe the content is in a macro and is not indexed?
What happens if you create a simple xlsm file with a single word in the first cell.. Does Everything find the file?
Could you please (optionally) send the SEARCH.xlsm in a bug report.
Your content indexing settings look fine and the file should be included.

Something is wrong here.
The Everything Service is not running correctly and Everything was externally launched as admin.
Please try checking Everything Service so it is tick-checked instead of square-checked.
How are you launching Everything?

Please make sure Everything is running as a standard user:
  • Right click your Everything.exe or a shortcut to Everything
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the Compatibility tab.
  • Uncheck Run this program as an administrator.
  • Click OK.

-Everything running as administrator might cause iFilters to fail for xlsm files.

Void - thank you very much for coming back to me. Quick reply before I run through uninstall/clean/reinstall etc etc (which I will do).

Contents of the files - all the Word files were created from one original TEST_SEARCH.DOC file. Search terms were tyoe in on alternate lines like;

MoneyMoneyMoney

IfIWasARichMan

Waterloo

then saved - then saved as a DOCX, then saved as a DOCM. Excel files the same method. All files should be pretty much identical content.

Before I posted my reply above - I had uninstalled Everything x86 - then rebooted - cleaned the registry (using CCleaner Registry Cleaner), then deleted the 'Everything' folders in APPDATA etc. Then I rebooted.

Then I downloaded the 1396a x64 version - I installed it in the normal way - double clicked it - ran the installer - chose 'Run as a service' - and add to right click menu. Once installed, I think it runs itself ? Thats what I remember anyway. When I opened the Tools | Options | Content - things were already filled in as before (surprising ?) - the General tab looked as the picture I posted above.

I never start Everything manually - but I did just stop it and restart it manually as per your instructions (thanks for making them so clear) - nothing was set to run Everything as Administrator. It appeared to start normally - those blue boxes still appear. If I set them to be clear - close down Everything, then restart manually - they are blue, just the same as before. I have also tried clicking the 'Restore Defaults', closed it, restarted it manually and the blue boxes come back. Maybe the way my PC is set up is slightly weird and this is causing the issue, possible.

I am going to have another go with the Windows 11 Pro PC Friday, and I will test it all as per your instructions and report back.

Please send your Help -> Troubleshooting information.

I wonder if there's a space at the end of your include only files filter...

Everything will run after being installed by default. (can be disabled in the installer)
Everything will also run on system startup by default. (can be disabled in the installer)

Thank you for your troubleshooting information.

Your settings look fine.

Some ideas...

Check if the system index find these files:

Try a MoneyMoneyMoney search from Windows Explorer.
Does Windows Explorer find the xlsm file?

Try the same from Everything:

*.xlsm si:MoneyMoneyMoney


si: = Search system index.



Check what content Everything has indexed.

In Everything, search for:

*.xlsm dotall:regex:content:(.*) addcolumn:1


content is shown under the regmatch1 column.
