Cannot Preview .snagx extensions

Post by uncleBob »

I use both Everhything and Techsmith Snagit almost daily. Snagit usually saves images as .Snagx extension which only Snagit editor can preview.

For instance I use < dm:7/25/2025 snagx > and see 20 files with names like 2025-07-25_12-01-21.snagx

They all have blank previews, so to see their content I must open them in Snagit editor (see note1 below)

It would be a great feature if Everything could do show the preview.

Of course Widnows Explorer has the same problem, but there is zero chance that Microsoft will add such a feature.

There is a far greater chance that Voidtools can do it.

p.s. Note1: Typically I can select the files in Everything then right click > open.
This opens the selected files in Snagit and I can then close the files I do not want.

Unfortunately, only 15 files can be opened this way. If I select 16 files, none of them get opened.

Can you post a sample .snagx ?

I saw a couple references to .snagx being a .zip (I suppose kind of like a .docx is a .zip) &/or .7zip.
(And if that's the case, can't imagine no one has come up with a "handler" for .snagx?)

Not sure what this does, Open Snagit snagx files.ps1, but maybe it could help in some way?

Everything uses the system to render thumbnails/previews.

Third party thumbnail and preview handlers can be installed.
Maybe a handler already exists for snagx?

when I change the extension to .zip it reveals

index.json
metadata.json
thumbnail.png

.png is nearly as universal as jpg, but it still cannot be previewed by explorer or everything.

If we can solve the .png preview I am pretty sure the .snagx will be easy.

ChatGpt tells me I can get a preview handle for .png by installing

https://sourceforge.net/projects/sagethumbs/
or https://www.xnview.com/en/xnshell/

and the link from TheRube seems to contain a complete c# preview handler but I don't see instructions on how to install it and haven't used c# ever.

I am I little bit out of my element here and not sure which of these options I should pursue.

Good news: i associated W11 Photos app with .png and now preview show in both explorer and Everything
Bad new: I previously associated snagit with .png but I can live without that association.
Worse news: associating with .snagx does not show preview in in either explorer or Everything. Nonetheless, photos.exe can display the .snagx files. it just cannot preview them.

Anybody have any more ideas?

Yestrday .snagx previews did not work, but today they work perfectly.

I think things are better because i played with a handful of different .snagx assocations. Photos, Chrome, irFanview, and a few others.
I also played with settings using command line Assoc and Ftype.

Somehow these fixed things, but I will probably never know which specific attempts worked.

In fact, I can no longer duplicate the original problem. Even when the association is back to my original value "Snagit Editor". and even after a reboot.

So I am closing this question.

My last post was incorrect. I now realize that some .png or .snagx files preview correctly and some do not. Since this problem replicates in Windows Explorer, I believe it is a bug in Snagit. I will open a ticket with Techsmith and see if they can provide more information.
If will only post back here if I get a resolution.
