Network drives/folders teporarily offline: disappearing from index

Post by juan »

Hello, I've been a user of Everything Search for years, and a few months back I've switched to v1.5 alpha, which adds several useful and highly desirable features. As far as I can tell, the alpha is being rock solid. Other developers would mark this version as beta already, or even production. So far so good!

Here's one possible misdemeanor - I'm not sure if it's been a glitch, or maybe my system, but here it is. I have some network drives and external folders indexed. Some are listed in Options -> Indexes -> Network Drives, some in Options -> Indexes -> Folders (with a nework path of the form
\\device\dir\ ).

My issue is that sometimes these external resources disappear from the indexed files. I am not sure what triggers the problem. It maybe the network device going offline while Everything is running, or a sudden power off on the (local) system running Everything.

My question is: are these behaviors expected? Is there a way to have Everything not to delete a network resource (disk or folder) from the index when it goes offline? It might come back soon, and as it is now apparently I have to explicitly re-add and/or re-index it.

For the Network Drives, is 'Automatically remove offline mapped network drives' deselected?
(Wonder if that actually only applies to mapped drives?)

Thanks for your reply!

I think it used to be - it is now for sure, but I still see the drives disappear. Maybe it resets to ON by default once you restore the drive?

Thank you for your feedback juan,

Tools -> Options -> Network drives -> Automatically remove offline mapped network drives only applies to mapped network drives.

Please makes sure it is unchecked.

This setting should never reset to ON.

as it is now apparently I have to explicitly re-add and/or re-index it.
To me it sounds like Everything is forgetting your settings.
Can you please confirm that the network drive is missing from Tools -> Options -> Network drives or Tools -> Options -> Folders.

Please make sure Everything is installed correctly:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Click OK.
-was this setting unchecked?
-please check if you are launching Everything with -volumes or -remove-volumes

Yes it was. I think that is the culprit. The cause might be that I've been running Everything as a portable install at first, but I have long since switched to a regular installation (before switching to 1.5 alpha, probably). Thank you! I'll check for any future misbehavior

I'm just running the service at the default settings - I doubt such switches are included in the commandline.

Thanks as usual for the on-point, effective help, void!
