"Check for Updates..." shows up-to-date status despite being behind on versions

Post by spooky »

Normally I would never bring this to anyone's attention because being on the latest is not THAT big of a deal, but the recent changes related to a stronger defense against DLL hijacking and other security patches in versions 1.5.0.1392a to 1.5.0.1395a push me here. I'm currently on version 1.5.0.1387a, and according to the program, I'm up to date.

Just a guess, but if this is intentional because of Everything's alpha status and the inconvenience of maintaining an online registry of (many) updated versions for the program to ping, I suggest just redirecting to viewtopic.php?t=9787 when clicking that menu option; manual, but better than a inaccurate "up to date" message.

I can still see the up-to-date status 2 weeks later. Could it be because I'm using the portable version?

There is no difference between the portable version and the setup.

It would be ideal if the check for updates was more effective.

* There's "Check for updates on startup" - however some people don't often close their computer but try to constantly leave it running or use sleep rather than close, so presumably Everything wouldn't often experience start up? normally the solution is to have Check for updates with a time interval such as daily, weekly, monthly, I think "Every X days" entry would be sufficient

* There's a setting 'beta_updates' but perhaps there could be an 'alpha_updates' setting too or update level or better still maybe it just goes by whatever you have, so an alpha program would report on beta or stable release that it has not yet reported on, a beta program would report on betas and stables, a stable would only report on stables?

Automatic update is on my TODO list.
It will not happen for Everything 1.5, maybe a future release.

I will consider periodic updates.
Thank you for the suggestion.

For now, Everything will check for updates once on first run.
-if enabled under Tools -> Options -> General -> Check for updates on startup.
You can manually check for updates under Help -> Check for updates.

The alpha version uses an alpha update channel and the beta_updates setting is ignored.
The beta version will use the beta update channel and the beta_updates setting is ignored.
The release version will use the release update channel and the beta update channel if beta_updates is enabled.
