I use two instances of Everything. (Both use the same Everything executable but each instance has its own configuration which is stored in its own INI file.)
(1) On one instance, when I select "Preview" to show a jpeg, Everything correctly displays the image alongside the results list.
(2) On the other instance, when I select "Preview" to show a jpeg, Everything causes the entire system to HANG. I am forced to power off to do a reboot.
Is there any obvious reason for this?
---
DETAIL: There a 3 or 4 NTFS drives shared between the instances. This is running on XP (yes, I know it's old!).
System hang from using PREVIEW (two Everything instances)
Re: System hang from using PREVIEW (two Everything instances)
My guess is there's a third party preview handler installed for jpg files? Is there any obvious reason for this?
Please try disabling show_preview_handlers_in_preview_pane and see if the issue persists:
- In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the Advanced tab on the left.
- To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
preview - Select: show_preview_handlers_in_preview_pane
- Set the value to: false
- Click OK.
Re: System hang from using PREVIEW (two Everything instances)
Unfortunately the suggested steps do not help prevent a system hang when viewing an image in Everything. As before, one instance shows the photos but the other hangs the entire system.
The hang occurs immediately after I click to focus on a jpeg in the results list and then select "Preview" from the Everything menu.
It must be something to do with the configuration because one instance of Everything works. I wonder what.

Thanks for checking.
Was show_preview_handlers_in_preview_pane disable in both instances?

Re: System hang from using PREVIEW (two Everything instances)
This might be a thumbnail handler.
Everything uses the system thumbnail handler to generate previews.
1024x1024 thumbnails are used for previews.
Do you have any third party thumbnail handlers installed?
Thumbnail handlers can be managed with with Nirsoft's ShellExView.
(Please don't disable any Microsoft handlers)
Could you please upload your Help -> Troubleshooting information for both instances in a bug report
This will help me try to find the issue.

Re: System hang from using PREVIEW (two Everything instances)
The preview pane in my working instance of Everything shows a full size picture. I expect the instance which crashes the system when I attempt to load the image preview is also set to a full picture, not a thumbnail.
I have uploaded the "Troubleshooting Info" for the two instances (as a single text file) via the link suggested.

Re: System hang from using PREVIEW (two Everything instances)
Thank you for the troubleshooting information.
I haven't had any luck reproducing the issue my end.
Running XP SP2 x64, running both instances with your setup.
I can preview jpg images in both instances.
Please try disabling Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> extract_image in both instances.
This will stop previews from showing images using thumbnails.
The preview pane will likely remain blank for you.
Does Everything crash the system if extract_image is disabled in both instances?
-If it helps stability it indicates there's something wrong with the jpg IExtractImage handler.

Re: System hang from using PREVIEW (two Everything instances)
As suggested, I disabled "extract_image" in both instances of Everything. Subsequently, when I selected a jpeg in the results list for display as an image preview, nothing appears. If I double click the jpeg, then my image program displays it normally.
Please note that my XP system does not actually crash with a blue screen but instead it hangs. Cursor movement stops. CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't work, nor does any keyboard command. I wonder if the system has been particularly sensitive to Everything's performance because it is running it in real time.
One difference is that the crashing instance uses the Everything indexing service, while the other working instance does not. I disabled the indexing service (on the troublesome instance) for the above tests. I have now re-enabled and, so far, image preview on the problem instance works properly without a system hang. YAY! I am so pleased. I have tested this after some XP reboots and all seems well.
