How to set - default drive or bookmark?

Post by ed.opinion »

I have 4 drives in my PC, one is OS & apps, one is STEAM games, one is DATA & one is DATA_BKUP (duplicate).

I only need to search my DATA drive & have a bookmark to simply a LITTLE, but if EVERYTHING opened to my X:\ drive - that would be GREAT!

Any help - please?

Thanks!

X:\ is STEAM ?

If you don't need OS or BKUP, deselect them
Options | Indexes | NTFS
-> Include in database

You lost me with "to simply a LITTLE"?

You can set up a Bookmark or a Filter to handle your DATA.
If DATA is D:\, then maybe that is sufficient,
D:\
, as your Bookmark or Filter.

You can set a search from command line or shortcut,
so something like,
Everything -s X:\

& you could have that open in a tab or a new window or...

Thanks for your reply, I really love EVERYTHING! Great tool. Makes life much easier.

Sorry for the typo above - "to simply a LITTLE" should have said "to SIMPLIFY a little".
~ meaning - I already made a bookmark in the app to X:\ and that simplifies things a little, but less clicks is better!

Can I make a "WIN desktop shortcut" to my EVERYTHING bookmark?

To be explicit:
C:\ = WIN10 ~ OS & APPS - rarely need to search
D:\ = STEAM - rarely need to search / easily accessible via STEAM interface
E:\ = DATA (I want to search this drive as default & for it to be the drive EVERYTHING opens to (like my bookmark in the app).
F:\ = DATA_BKUP (duplicate of E:\ - as a result, I get dupes in search results)

A shortcut on my taskbar to my "E:\" (DATA drive) is the answer for me.
~ "C:\Program Files\Everything 1.5a\Everything64.exe" -s E:\

Is there any way to add a default space after -s E:\ <space?
My EVERYTHING bookmark opens "E:\ ", so I can just start typing...

It's nice to know if I need ALL DRIVES, I just hit the WIN key, type EVERY > ENTER to search all drives.

It's also nice to know there is an option to include (thus exclude) specific drives!
~ Options | Indexes | NTFS -> Include in database

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE HELP @therube

Thank you for your feedback ed.opinion,

Can I make a "WIN desktop shortcut" to my EVERYTHING bookmark?
Create a shortcut to your Everything.exe with the following command line option:

C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.exe -bookmark "My Bookmark Name"

(where My Bookmark Name is your bookmark name)

Instead of bookmarks, please consider filters:
In Everything, from the Search menu, click Add to Filters:
Change the Name to: C:\ (WIN10)
Change the Search to:
c:

Click OK.
---
From the Search menu, click Add to Filters:
Change the Name to: D:\ (STEAM)
Change the Search to:
d:

Click OK.
---
From the Search menu, click Add to Filters:
Change the Name to: E:\ (DATA)
Change the Search to:
e:

Click OK.
---
From the Search menu, click Add to Filters:
Change the Name to: F:\ (DATA_BKUP)
Change the Search to:
f:

Click OK.

Filters can be activated from the Search menu, Filter bar (View -> Filter Bar), Filter sidebar (View -> Filters), right clicking the status bar, filter macro or filter keyboard shortcut.
Filters can be organized from Search menu -> Organize filters.

To set your default filter:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Home tab on the left.
  • Set Filter to: E:\ (DATA)
  • Click OK.

Is there any way to add a default space after -s E:\ <space?
Please try the following command:

"C:\Program Files\Everything 1.5a\Everything64.exe" -s "E:\ "

MWUAHAHAA!!! You have made me ALL POWERFUL!

Great info, sincerely appreciated. I think this thread has enough keywords that it will help others in the future (I searched before I posted but didn't hit the jackpot with the search terms I was using).

I did not know about the filters - very cool. I will be trying them + digging through menu items to learn more.

For today, your last comment did the trick - all I needed was the quotes around "E:\ " with the space built in!

Code: Select all

"C:\Program Files\Everything 1.5a\Everything64.exe" -s "E:\ "
Thank you very much for your sharing your knowledge, spending the time & making the effort to type it all out :!:
