High RAM usage (or is it normal??)

Post by MadDogDean »

Hey all,

Noticed a little lag on my PC (not necessarily Everything related), but when in Task Manager I did notice Everything sucking tons of RAM.

While watching, it was ranging between 5,900 MB to 2,900 MB.
Network usage was pretty steady around 24Mbps

Everything is set as a Service (but only using 0.4MB at the time)
Everything is set to update at 3:00 AM daily (current time was 7:00 PM)

I have 2 local SSD's that are indexed (2TB + 4TB)
Also a NAS (2x 16TB) connected on a 1GB network
In total there are about 5 million files indexed.

At the time I looked I was not searching or actively using Everything and no Rescan was taking place.

So, just wondering is this normal usage, or do I need to provide more info?

Cheers

How many files is Everything indexing?
(shown in the status bar at the bottom left when your search is empty)

For 5,900 MB of RAM I would expect about 59,000,000 files.

Hey,

Indexing is about 5.3 million files.

I think it may have been something gone weird though. Even after Everything was Exited, it still showed high RAM usage. I needed to kill the app in Task Manager.

As of this morning, It's running at 428MB with 5M files, so all seems good. Just not sure why it was so high and the network usage was up as well. I'll have to keep an eye on this and come back if it anything weird happens again.

Cheers

Hate to resurrect the dead, but had this happen again tonight.

Scanning was set to "Never rescan"
All drives index about 4.4 million files
Everything was using 2,900 MB of RAM
Network was at 19.3 Mbps

Files are a mix of local and network drives, all on a 1GB local network (wired not wireless)

Theoretically Everything should have been doing nothing.
Everything version 1.4.1.1034 (x64)
Win 11, Version 24H2 (OS build 26100.3775)
Ryzen 7 7840HS
AMD Radeon RX 6650M
32GB Ram

Cheers

Are you running an ETP server? (Tools -> Options -> ETP Server)
Are you running an HTTP server? (Tools -> Options -> HTTP Server)

I am wondering if something is up with monitoring changes to these volumes...

Please try capturing a log:
When Everything is using a lot of memory, in Everything, type in the following search and press ENTER:
/debug_log
Let Everything sit for a minute.
Type in the following search and press ENTER:
/restart
Please upload your %TEMP%\Everything Debug Log.txt in a bug report

Check your Resource Monitor for clues:
Open the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + ESC)
In the Task Manager, click the Performance tab.
Click Resource Monitor.
In the Resource Monitor, click the Network tab.
Check the access is expected/unexpected.

Are you showing thumbnails? (View -> Thumbnails/Details)
-Thumbnails can consume a large amount of RAM until the window is closed.

Are you showing the preview pane? (View -> Preview)
-Maybe there's a bad preview handler still running

Thanks for the reply.
Not running an ETP or HTTP server.

I'll observe and the next time I'll go ahead and pull a log and check the network.

Neither Preview nor Thumbnails was on, normally I run all my searches as List.

What is odd, is that Everything was not actively in use at the time, other than sitting in the Tray Notification.

I'll keep you posted.

I may have figured it out.

Although I only installed once to Trial a program called WavePad (by NCH Software), it appears that NCH was doing crazy things every morning around 1 - 2 AM on my PC. Completed eradicated that trash and will watch what happens the next few days.

Cheers
