Request: adding Everything to right click context menu in folder background

Post by juan »

Hello, I'm not sure if this is the right subforum for this, so please move or delete this post if necessary.

I think it would be great if we could launch Everything from the Windows right click context menu, even when right clicking the background space in a folder view - even in the file selector window (common dialog? Whatever it's called today). The context, of course, would be the relevant folder.

This would make it very convenient, e.g., to locate a file to open within a hierarchy of folders, possibly deeply nested.

Thank you for considering this request!

D'oh!! Thanks for bearing up with the silly question.
Great piece of software, really.
It should be bundled with Windows and you should get royalties.

Re: Request: (key shortcut) Everything in right click context menu in folder background

Post by juan »

Now I focused better, and I remember what the actual issue was. It would be nice to be able to invoke Everything with a keyboard shortcut in the same context. Apparently, the keyboard shortcut doesn't get the right context (the folder I'm browsing) if invoked from the Common Dialog (File Selector).

- Go to Menu => Tools => Options => Advanced
- In the right pane, type "explore" in the Show commands containing field
- Select hotkey_explorer_path_search
- Set its value to true
- In the left pane, select Keyboard
- Define the hotkey to use in one of the upper 3 fields (hover these fields for details and explanation)
- OK
- Done.

That's really good, NotNull.
Everything DOES everything (besides finding everything)
And you are as nice and efficient as can be with your help.
Thank you very much, really!

I think v1.4 couldn't do this from the Common Dialog (File Selector).
The new v1.5 is a major improvement on the already excellent v1.4.

I was wondering, if "Search with Everything" could be added to the explorers context menu and well... it is already implemented.
Everything is so cool. :D

I tested the context menu and it works great. Only in one setting I got no results: network drives

When I use the context menu option on a folder, that is on a network drive - UAC shows up and I enter admin credentials, but then I get no results.
That is - I assume - because that admin does not have read permission on that network folder. Can I define, what user is used when using the context menu search option?

The automatically added search prompt is: "\\<IP>\Buecherei$\Fotos\"

Please make sure Everything is installed correctly and running as a standard user:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (from the File menu, click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.

Thank you. I followed your instructions. It still does not show results. It looks like it is still using admin credentials (see screenshot).

That process starts automatically and stays active, even if I do not have any open everything windows or tray icons.

I use the portable edition under Windows 11.

That process is the Everything Service.
The Everything Service will use about 1MB of RAM and no noticeable CPU.
The Everything Service process is always running.
The Everything Service allows the Everything GUI process to index and monitor your NTFS volumes as a standard user.

If Everything is still showing the UAC prompt when launched from right clicking in the folder background:
  • Right click your Everything.exe or a shortcut to Everything
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the Compatibility tab.
  • Uncheck Run this program as an administrator.
  • Click OK.
Please make sure Everything is running as a standard user:
  • Right click your Everything.exe or a shortcut to Everything
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the Shortcut tab.
  • Click the Advanced button.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK.
Please make sure Everything is running as a standard user:
  • Right click your Everything.exe or a shortcut to Everything
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the Compatibility tab.
  • Click the Change settings for all users button at the bottom.
  • Uncheck Run this program as an administrator.
  • Click OK.
Does the UAC prompt persist?

Thank you.
Already since my last post, no UAC window appears.
In the Everything.exe's properties the checkbox "Run this program as an administrator" is and was unchecked.
When opening an Everything search window via a folders context menu, two processes are visible in the task manager (screenshot).

The network folder still can not be searched (empty).

With which credentials the network access is performed?

The two processes is normal.

One for the Everything Service process.
The other for the GUI process.

Standard user.

Please add your network folder to your Everything index:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Folders tab on the left.
  • Click Add....
  • Select your network folder and click OK.
  • Click OK.

Please add your network folder to your Everything index:

In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
Click the Folders tab on the left.
Click Add....
Select your network folder and click OK.
Click OK.
That works. It now shows the files contained in that folder.
There are many network folders, do I add them all to the "folders" field?
