Everything not locating target

Post by weybrew »

I have been using Everything for some time without any problems, and I have come to rely on its accuracy and speed. Recently, however, a target is not located unless I find it manually. I've tried uninstall/reinstall with no change. The latest target was on an external drive, one the Everything has always found on previous searches. What's going on here. I'd appreciate all feedback.

Please make sure no search options are checked under the Search menu (eg: uncheck match case, uncheck match whole words, uncheck regex)

Please make sure the Everything filter is active under the Search menu.

Please make sure these files are not excluded from Tools -> Options -> Exclude.

Please make sure Everything is installed correctly and running as a standard user:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (from the File menu, click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.

To include your external drive in your Everything index:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Folders tab on the left.
  • Click Add....
  • Select your external drive (for example: E: drive) and click OK.
  • Click OK.

Please try forcing a rebuild:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Indexes tab on the left.
  • Click Force Rebuild.
  • Click OK.

Thanks so much for the excellent post. Very concise and specific... great for a senior, non-techie like myself. I followed each step as instructed and Everything now finds the target file I searched for previously, unsuccessfully. I am sincerely grateful as I use this program constantly and rely on its accuracy and speed. A tip of the hat to you, sir.
