Unable to OPEN files from Everything

Post by joebrug »

I have an Azure AD joined computer (windows 11) that I've always had issues OPENING files from via everything. I get a message saying "The system cannot find the drive specified" (Z:\Active Clients\test.pdf), however the preview window opens the document just fine. I have a mapped drive to z: that I can navigate using windows explorer just fine as well.. the only issue is trying to OPEN a file from Everything. Any ideas? Just upgraded my workstation to 1391a, server is still a bit behind. Other computers (domain joined) can open files without issue.

Is Everything running as admin or a different user?

Please make sure Everything is installed correctly and running as a standard user:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (from the File menu, click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.

It was set to Run as Administrator (for some reason?). Thank you! Is there a need to set it as a service if its just using a network index (not local) ? It seems to be working without being a service.

No, the service is only needed to scan the volume on which Windows is installed. Typically your C:-drive.

The service (or Admin) is needed to scan any NTFS drive. I just tested it and with the service removed all NTFS drives have the checkmark for ENABLE USN JOURNAL blank and have an Everyhing message To turn on the service or run as Admin to index the volume.

OK, will check. What Windows version are you using?

IndexThis is built on this principle, so I hope something else is going on...

WIn7 and WIn10. 1391a.

I just unchecked Everything Service. The popup note says that the service or admin index process is required for indexing NTFS volumes on a standard user account.

This is a known Windows restriction which can't be removed by Everything
with other means than the Service or an Admit account.

You can disable the NTFS volumes and add Folder indexing.
There, you need only read access to the folders you want to scan.
