Everything panel won't open after 2/11 MS updates

Post by drawson »

I've been using Everything okay. After today's Microsoft Updates to Windows 10, when I try to open Everything from the taskbar icon, I see the small hourglass on my cursor for a second or two, but Everything does not open. Everything Service is running when I look in Task Manager.

Since I can't open Everything, I can't change its configuration in its Tools menu.

Advice?

If I were to uninstall and reinstall Everything, could I preserve my search strings (I forget the terminology), the ones that I apply in addition to what I type into the search box?

I've actually already uninstalled one MS update, KB5051974, because something was interfering with booting W10 when I had external displays connected via HDMI. Dell XPS15.

- In Command Prompt (CMD.exe), go to the folder where your Everything.exe is located, for example "C:\Program Files\Everything"
- Run the following command:

Code: Select all

everything.exe -debuglog
- After Everything exits, start Explorer
- paste the following in its address bar and press ENTER

Code: Select all

%TEMP%
- Post your Everything Debug Log.txt here (zipped if it is large)

I expect your database to be corrupt. Deleting the database (which is is located in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Everything) and starting Everything after that might fix the issue too

BTW: the settings can be changed in the INI file manually if no other options are available.
The ini file is located in %APPDATA%\Everything (paste this address in Explorer's address bar)

All other settings are in
%APPDATA%\Everything
too. Backing up this folder is enough.
If these settings cannot be found in this folder (in case of a portable installation), they are likely in the program folder; the one with everything.exe

You'd want to ensure that the Everything GUI is not running when you do that, which it sounds like it is not, in your case.
(The Service can be left running.)

Thanks so much for both those replies. I will retain them.

After more MS updates and restarts, the Everything app now functions well and I had done nothing specifically to repair it. That is, even the database survived, as far as I noticed; I didn't notice the expected delay while it rebuilds the database.

Windows Update process reinstalled overnight the update that I had removed, and even added one more. I experienced various troubles with Windows Explorer (the file finder interface and the whole desktop experience), and with major, erratic delays. After enough reboots, things have mostly settled out.

My systems seems stable now once it is booted, but booting stalls unless I have disconnected all three USB hubs from the PC before booting. I can reconnect them later and then functions seem otherwise normal. I speculate that this month's updates introduced or provoked a driver problem. Disconnecting and reconnecting serves as a manual workaround, but something must be wrong.

Still, the Everything app works now. Thanks for your advice, and for the app.
