creating a 'favourite' list

Post by littlebutter283 »

Hi, I have been using everything search for a while now,

my daily works involve selecting a bunch of different reference photos and saving them to a list, so that I can isolate them and view them as a collection. I will like to add or remove items at will.

my current workflow is just copy and pasting the names of the photos into another search field using OR (|) and will end up with a very long search query, while its easy to 'add' items by adding anew name, it's not so easy to remove one.

Would there happen to be a better method?

Several.

What does your list look like? Just the names (file.txt) or including the path (c:\folder\file.txt)
Do you store the list on disk in a file?
How often does this list change? Every day? Every month?

I assume you are using Everything 1.5?

If it's not an issue you can also put a keyword in the filenames and afterward search for the keyword (have the keyword in the clipboard). If there are many visible in the results you can ctrl-click them all then rename them in bulk to add the keyword.

I would though be quite keen in having available click-to-toggle marker columns (several, showing different coloured blobs such as red, green, blue when toggled on) and the ability to sort/filter on them like any other even if it were volatile and lost on closing down.

hi, the typical list looks like this.
1.jpg
i have already categorize them with a prefix for each file according to the picture's category.
I'd then select a few pictures that i think looks good together to create a collection in another list with the file name, these pictures are in different categories
2.jpg
I'd then often remove and add items new items to the 'collection' very regularly.
I sometimes update the filename (only prefix number) if they have been name wrongly.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Right, no need to post my "several ways" as these concentrate on lists of filenames and you take a visual approach.
Two other ideas then:

Create new favourite list in a new tab
  • Make sure the tab bar is shown (for example by opening a new, empty tab)
  • Activate the tab with your favourites
  • Select all, minus the ones you no longer need
(you can also select the ones you don't want, followed by Menu => Edit => Invert Selection)
  • Drag the selection to the tab bar.
  • When you see the "+ New Tab" infotip, drop the files.
This new tab now contains your new favourites
  • Close the previous favourites tab

Exclude items from the list
  • MAke sure Enable Result Omissions is checked (under Menu => Index)
  • In the tab with your favourites, select the ones you no longer need
  • Right-click one of them
  • Select Temporary Omit form the context menu
The selected files will no longer be shown
To show all favourites again (including the ones that are no longer shown):
  • Double-click TEMP OMIT in the statusbar
(or right-click => Clear Temporary Result Omissions )
