Everything 1.5 release date

Post by didlybom »

Hi,

I've been a long-time user of Everything. First of all, thanks a lot for your work on it. It is a great and really useful tool! It is amazing that it's so much better than Microsoft's own search functionality!

I've been following the development of version 1.5 which has been getting very regular updates but has stayed in alpha for a long time. Is there an expected official release date for it? How far do you think it is from being stable enough to replace version 1.4 as the default?

Thanks!

Release date unknown, When it is ready ...

On the other hand: I would not hesitate to start using version 1.5 right now.
It is very stable already and has been for quite a while.
At the very least it is much more stable than the operating system you are running it on :D

When you install version 1.5, it will be installed alongside 1.4. You can use both at the same time if you wish.

The 1.5 version is so much better in all aspects
that I can't understand why one should stay with the 1.4.
I don't' see any benefit using both in parallel.

Testing, comparing.

(I still use 1.4 for replaying 1.4 forum questions; other than that: 1.5 )

That's a valid reason but a very special case :)

Then, may I ask why not release the current version as 1.5.0, or at least mark it as a beta, even if you plan to keep improving it? Alpha usually indicates that software is very unstable...

Typically with software development:
- Alpha version is used to add new features
- Beta version starts when feature complete and is used to fix all bugs and issues. Also for finetuning the features. Or removing some of them.

When the amount of reported issues in the beta phase is below a certain level:
- Official stable release.

New features are still being added to Everything, so alpha stage.

Different from typical software development is that in Everything's case issues are fixed right away.
In Everything-speed, so if there might be an issue, it gets solved in a couple of days/hours.

But in the end it is all up to @void. If he wants to call it a purple version, then that is what it is. It is just a label ..
Try it and see for yourself.
