Many/many files, long path names, NTFS junction loops? SOLVED --> my crummy drive was culprit

First, I love this and haven't really used it much yet.

The ES command line search is especially lovable. (Is ES experimental still?).

I don't do much "GUI" searching on any machine but seeing as it had both a VERY QUICK GUI and the ability to use a PowerShell or cmd query with ES this is fantastic.

Way to go!

The following are just preliminary questions after reading the FAQ quickly and doing a couple of support forum searches (I probably missed some answers):

Many/many files
As a software developer and learning my laptop with only a 230 GB drive has millions of files (possibly millions of directories.) My home directory tree has about 464 thousand files alone.

Long path names
There are 69 files/directories in my Profile/Home which exceed the 260 byte "maximum" path length (I cleaned this up from much worse just last night.)

NTFS junction loops?
Part of the problem was that when my laptop was migrated from the older hardware the support tech was following a simple corporate recipe and did a naive copy which apparently looped Application Data (a Microsoft supplied junction point) back into a parent creating a semi-infinite loop (until the max path was well exceeded and the tool likely stopped.)


Even though I saw Everything work really snappy on a large file server, the "icon" will not display the search window after an hour. I strongly suspect it is dealing with the large file count, Long path names, or a junction loop.

I am going to let it run overnight to see if it will finish, then tomorrow build something to search for other "NTFS loops" and try to deal with "long path names" by moving them higher in the trees, or deleting them.

My real question is does Everything take any or all of this into consideration?

BUT PLEASE, understand this is NOT a complaint or really even a request for 'support' unless you have easy answers.

Everything doesn't "follow" junctions, so no loops ..



You provided very little technical information (especially since you are a programmer!). Finding out what's going on on your side will be hard this way.
I think the easiest way is to start all over, because the things you experience are highly untypical:

- Uninstall Everything
- Remove the Everything folders under %APPDATA% and %LOCALAPPDATA% (if existent)
- Download Everything 1.4.1.895 from the homepage
- Run the Everything installer
- Install following the default settings (see the pictures on http://www.voidtools.com/support/everyt ... verything/)
Especially important: Install Everything service , Start Everything on system startup and Automatically index fixed NTFS volumes

When running the Everything GUI, you will see on your screen a list of the files and folders it has found (the totals are in the status bar: xxxx objects.
All in all this should take no more than a couple of seconds.

After that, you can use ES.exe. It needs Everything.exe running (hence the "Start Everything on system startup"), because Everything.exe provides access to the database.

I had pretty much done all that you said, but I uninstall & deleted everything, then repeated the install according to your instructions.

Everything-1.4.1.895.x64-Setup.exe -- Windows 7. 1.2 million files

Originally it took several hours to show the UI (went to bed so don't know when it finished precisely). It was showing when I got up.

Now it has been started (by the install) for 26+ minutes and still can't show the UI yet.

Good, I know there are still close to a 1000 paths that are too long -- buried down in the "Node.js" libraries

Keep using Everything, and you'll find out that is clever in a lot of ways (simple on the outside; clever on the inside),
You are probably going to like the configurability and command-line options of Everything ...
I was (and am) impressed, too. And I've seen/inspected literally thousands of programs.

If you need some help figuring out what's going on on your system, don't hesiitate to ask. A lot of helpful people here...

So I would like to use Everything on my laptop and it seems it's worse than I thought.

After 6+ hours, it still hasn't shown the file list -- though the window finally did pop open a few hours after start. (Window frame with nothing in data/client area.) Pressing the "close" box results in a popup saying "The application is not responding...".

Ideas on what to check next (besides the re-install) are appreciated. There is NO database in %AppData% nor in %LocalAppData%

%AppData% did have the Everything written INI file (untouched by me) but even though I included it below it doesn't look like that will help.

Ideas on what to check next (besides the re-install) are appreciated. There is NO database in %AppData% nor in %LocalAppData%

%AppData% did have the Everything written INI file (untouched by me) but even though I included it below it doesn't look like that will help.

I certainly will not advice you to re-install. That didn't help, so no use doing that again. But now we know how it is installed (removes a lot of variables from the equation).

Your INI file is indeed completely standard (I used this: viewtopic.php?t=6285 to compare. Btw I had to create a new Default.ini as there were too many changes to the INI entries since I wrote it)


What stands out is what is *not* in the INI file. At least it should have entries similar to these:

ntfs_volume_paths="C:"

for the disk(s) that it found.
That might be because Everything "lives" in RAM and only reads settings and database on startup. Only when you change a setting or when you exit Everything completely (Systemtray > secondary mousebutton > Exit ) the INI and database will be written to disk.

If Everything has this much trouble indexing your disk, you might want to check it's health /integrity. Start with a CHKDSK and reading the SMART data of the disk (I use CrystalDiskInfo for that. There is a portable edition (no install needed)).
There are more handles to find out what's going on, but I would start here.

As I suspected it was my crappy system -- which is not completely under my control.

Turns out that I had 2 corporate mapped drives that are almost always unreachable except when I explicitly connect to their VPN.

They had persistently mapped these drives -- maybe worse in a GPO ...?

Even though I have been doing MS networking and drive mapping since before there was a Windows (PC Net, PC Lan) I had a heck of a time making them go away.

The clue was that PowerShell would hang up on enumerating them Get-PSDrive would never finish. (I use this a lot so it much be recent, perhaps from last weekend when I updated patches.)

Long story short. Got them out.

Everything loaded and immediately opened a working window -- took it about 10 seconds to populate the 1.2 million files.

It even seemed to be fully indexed

Still trying to figure out how you would do that. Hint might be in the reference to the Journal, really?

Is the es CLI program dependent on the "Window/TrayIcon" -- mine doesn't seem to work with just the service running? (Could easily be that I have been starting and stopping this off and on.

I was hoping to use it in some scenarios where the "Window" searcher might not be running (yet) but that probably isn't a big deal.

UPDATE: On my other (personal) laptop it took Everything about 2 minutes the very first time to display and search 2.8 MILLION files.

Windows keeps track of files in 2 (hidden) places: (1) MFT (Master File Table; the successor of File Allocation Table /FAT) is the "global address book" of all your files and (2) the USN journal. Here Windows keeps track of all the changes to the drive. Sort of transaction log. Backup programs use this to know what to back-up. And it is used to self-repair the"global address book".
Every NTFS drive has it's own MFT and USN journal. When you index a disk for the first time, the information comes from the MFT; if you add/delete/modify files, that info comes from the USN journal.
"Normal" users don't have access to this MFT and USN journal. You have to be an administrator for that or ... install the Everything service and let the service "talk" to these hidden parts.
That's all the service does: you and I talk to the service, the service talks to MFT and USN journal. It's a gateway, used to read updates to the filesystem into the Everything database.

The Everything database must be loaded in memory to use it. That is what Everything.exe does. ES.exe doesn't load the database by itself. ES asks Everything.exe (the database manager) to do some queries. Results of that are reported back to ES.exe. So ES.exe needs Everything.exe to be running.

Beside service and database manager, Everything.exe is also the GUI (and a couple of other thing too, but I digress ..).
When you run ES.exe, you don't need the GUI; "just" the database manager is enough. That can be done with this command-line:

I might get a little confused on "everything.exe" -- I have two Everything processes running, both backed by "Everything.exe". One is in session 0, the "Service", and the other is in my session (#1 console), the "icon and searcher window".

One of my main use cases is remote or background scripting for discovery and file checks so I wonder if the "Gui" nature would be an issue, I"ll have to add a check to one of my build scripts and test that.

Just last week I had to find all the instances of 7zip on a LOT of servers/workstations due to a security bug our security team made an issue for remediation. Turns out that between normal installs, terminal service users, and tools (from PowerShell to a dozen other things) that 7zip might be in a LARGE number of places.

I had to naively search every (local) drive find them and check the versions. With ES and Everything the targets would be found instantly and it would only take a moment to check the versions on a few dozen files.

Frequently when scripting I am dependent on some tool that is almost always "present' but may be in odd locations. ES will make that a breeze.

I'm not a developer and there are probably better ways to formulate things (sorry for potential confusion..), but my simplified explanation:
If the icon is in the systray, the database is running. If there is also a taskbar icon active, the GUI is also running.
If you close the GUI part (Menu:File > Exit) EDIT: That's wrong; I meant "Press <Escape> or Menu:File > Close !! , the database will still be running (see systray). If you choose Exit in the systray, that will unload the database *and* exit all GUI's (*).

GUI and database run in the same process; you can't use that to differentiate between the two. But if there is a Everything.exe process running in user-context, you can safely assume that the database is running (*)
It is not a very big deal if the GUI is also running, btw. IIRC, it used about 3MB RAM extra.

If I'm wrong about all this, I hope someone with more knowledge and experience steps in to correct me.


(*) Everything is highly configurable; it is easy to change the systray /taskbar/.. behaviour and make these guidelines invalid. But this is the "out of the box experience".
