Dead Dying Drive - Everything Querying...

Post by therube »

Dead Dying Drive - Everything Querying...

Hooked a dead/dying HDD to USB adapter...
Forgot about Everything (how could anyone!?)

Drive (presumably) is not readable

Everything went, Querying..., to, Not Responding...

Not sure if Everything was querying the drive (but thinking not cause it's external & should not be indexed by default)?
ntfs_volume_paths=C:,E: (actual volumes)
ntfs_volume_guids=(only shows 2, i.e., same number as ntfs_volume_paths)

Anyhow...

At this point, Everything will not open, simply goes into a Querying/Not Responding state.
Similarly Salamander will not load (present its' GUI).

Granted, this may not be an Everything issue at all, but rather this type of thing is not unexpected when dealing with dying/dead devices, & I'm sure a reboot (ugh!) will right things.

(Attaching .dmp, fwiw.)

(4 months it's been since I've rebooted.
And I knew better! [That I should have been playing on someone else's computer ;-).])

After reboot, oddly, G: got added a second time?

Dead Dying Drive - Everything Querying...
Sorry to hear about the dying drive.

Thanks for the dmp.
Everything is hanging while trying to access your dying volume when attempting to build a list of available volumes.

Not too much I can do here as Everything is only trying to read the volume label and volume format.
I will consider building the list of volumes in a thread with some timeout value.

I will consider completely ignoring removable volumes when auto include removable volumes is unchecked for NTFS, FAT and ReFS.
After reboot, oddly, G: got added a second time?
The letter-case for C in \\server\C has changed.

Everything uses the Dos Device Target to determine the remote share.
The upper case drive share may have come from an earlier build of Everything.

The case change shouldn't matter, unless you are including the offline drive.
Only one drive should be listed under Tools -> Options -> Network drives.

Volume GUIDs are case sensitive. I may need to make a special case for network drives if this becomes an issue.

Everything 1.5.0.1273a will now avoid accessing new removable volumes when all of the following settings are disabled:

Auto Include new removable FAT volumes
Auto Include new removable NTFS volumes
Auto Include new removable ReFS volumes

All these settings are disabled by default.
