View - Sort by - not saving

Post by krosal »

When trying to configure a sorting option it doesn't seem to want to save the settings. I have tried to set it a couple of different ways, but it comes back with the default settings. We are trying to have it sort by extension and then in Ascending order.

I tried exiting and then going back in, but it didn't seem to save. Is there a way to set a default setting for this?

Please see the images.

Thank you,

If the information is not in Everything's sorting index, sorting by it will be slower. That is why Everything switches back to one of the sorting fields that *is* in the database.

Try enabling Fast extension sort on the ETP Server (Menu:Tools > Options > Indexes) and see if that helps ( I'm not sure if this works the same way on an ETP Server ..)

Furthermore, under Menu:Tools > Options > Home, you can configure the default sort.

Hello,
I set up the Fast extension sort on the ETP server, but that didn't follow though to the client. I also configured the default sort and that also did not follow though to the client. Is there somewhere on the client .ini that resolve this?

Thank you,

Not that I know. Will have to set up an ETP Server for that (one of these days).
But maybe someone else here knows the answer to that question.

Just set up an ETP Server and -client. Here the same behaviour. I don't know enough about ETP Servers to tell you if this is how it should be.

I do have a workaround, though.
If interested, I need to know how you start Everything.exe on the clients (which command-line options and where do you define the credentials to connect to the ETP Server)

Hello,
My clients are logging into the ETP server automatically by the configuration in the Tools/Options/Home/ETP Server selection. The Index Option is selected as ETP Server. The Everything launches automatically on the System Startup option. No user credentials is needed to connect to the ETP server. It's setup on the ETP server with no credentials set.

I would be interested in the work around.

Thank you,

Create a bookmark on your clients like this.
Imprortant is the "Remember Sort".
I named the bookmark "Startup", but you can name it anything you like.

A couple ways:

Change the on-startup registry entry:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Uncheck Start Everything on system startup.
  • Click OK.
  • From the Start menu, run regedit
  • In the Registry Editor, On the left, navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • On the right, double click Everything
  • Change the value data to:
    "C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.exe" -bookmark "Startup"
-where C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.exe is the location of your Everything.exe
  • Click OK.
  • Close the Registry Editor.
-or-

Replace the registry on-startup event with a custom startup shortcut:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Uncheck Start Everything on system startup.
  • Click OK.
  • In Windows Explorer, in the address bar, type in the following and press enter:
    shell:startup
  • Right click and click New -> Shortcut.
  • Set the location of the item to:
    "C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.exe" -bookmark "Startup"
  • Click Next.
  • Click Finish.

This will show the Everything window on startup, which might not be what you want.

Another option is to set your home search:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Home tab on the left.
  • Set your default search and view.
  • Click OK.

Hello, Unfortunately that did not work. I first tried the creating the "Startup" shortcut using the Shell:Startup and that did not save the setting. I did create the new bookmark for the startup sort, but it defaulted back to the default settings for some reason.

I then went and modified the ETP Server settings, closed/re-opened Everything on the client and that did not stick. The ETP Server sort settings on the Server stays set, but does not follow though to the clients.

After setting the Bookmark -Startup, the configuration did not stick and the sorting was set back as default and set back to Name as shown.

After you unchecked Start Everything on system startup as @void described:
  • Right-click the Everything icon in the systemtray and choose Exit
  • Start File Explorer
  • In the address bar, type
    shell:startup
    and press ENTER
The address bar should now show C:\Users\krosal\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
  • From the Explorer menu, choose Home
  • Click New Item
  • Click Shortcut
  • In the "Type the location of the item:" box, type

    Code: Select all

    "C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.exe" -bookmark "Startup"
(if your client's everything.exe is in a different path, use that path instead)
  • Click Next
  • Give your shortcut a sensible name, for example Everything.
  • Click Finish
  • Right-click the freshly created Everything shortcut and choose Properties
  • Click the Shortcut tab
  • Check if the target is indeed "C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.exe" -bookmark "Startup"
  • Change the Run setting from "Normal window" to "Minimized"Click the Shortcut tab
  • Click OK
To test, you don't need to reboot; just double-click the shortcut you just created.
(Make sure you exit Everything after each test)

If that still doesn't sort your files by extension: what is configured under Menu:Tools > Options Home : Sort ?

Hello,
I went and created the -Bookmark "Startup" based on the instructions that were requested and notice this.

When opening the '-Bookmark "Startup" shortcut and then go to the View - Sort by", the selection is at the "Date Modified" & "Ascending".

Then entering a part number and performing the search, the View changes back to the default which is "Name" as shown below.

So, the issue is that when a search is performed, the View changes back to default. If I open up Everything again, the sort shows configured, but perform the sort and it changes back to default. It wont stick for some reason.

The image is after the search is performed.

If I go to the ETP Server and do the same same within the 'View" "Sort by" the sort saves fine. For some reason, it doesn't follow through or save to the ETP client settings. The ETP client sort "changes" to default when performing a search.

Hello,
Currently the Menu: Tools > Options Home : Sort is set to 'Extension'

If I look at the View > Sort by, it is set back to the 'Name' as soon a the search is performed. Before the search is performed, it shows View > Extension.

The Tools > Options Home : Sort is still set to Extension after the search is performed.

Has there been any update on this? We are experiencing the same problem. Default sort is set, but as soon as you start typing it reverts back to Name.

Are you also running an ETP Server?

Yes, the same scenario that was posted. It will keep the sorting for the field we want until we start to type then it reverts to Name field. I've checked everything thru this post to confirm the steps. I just forced a rebuild on the server to make sure it was set to the latest. We are doing our sorts on the modified date field but have the same results.

ETP does not support fast sorting. (yet)
The sort will reset to Name ascending after changing the search when connected to an ETP server.

Please try enabling always keep sort:
  • In Everything, type in the following and press ENTER:
    /always_keep_sort=1
  • If successful, you should see always_keep_sort=1 in the status bar for a few seconds.
Fast sorting support for ETP is planned for a future release of Everything.

Thank you. That did work. Is there anything that we could change in the ini that would accomplish that? Or do I have to run that on all the machines that we have connected to the ETP server?

Do you have a general time frame for a future release that it might be included in? I'm new to Everything so I don't know how often you update it.
