Is the developer still alive?

Post by Link » Sat Feb 22, 2014 7:54 pm

Have anyone talked with the developer of Everything recently?

I have tried to contact him because I want to work on the project.
I did make a clone of Everything but its memory usage was too high in my opinion compared to Everything.

Good question!

According to the WhoIs data for voidtools.com (http://www.whois.com/whois/voidtools.com) the domain was updated a month ago (which I think means paid for).

Maybe someone should write David a letter...

I have written David Carpenter (aka void) a number of emails (david@voidtools.com) over the last month and have had no reply.

The last post by void is dated Wed Jul 03, 2013 9:06 pm - I hope the poor devil is both alive and still interested in this great little app!

I donated money and sent him an email way back in june 2013. No response at all.
It is remarkable the forum is still relatively very active even though there is neither any development on this tool nor any comments from the developer.
Personally, I think Everything is still the best.
Another tool is MasterSeeker (http://www.master-seeker.com/).
http://dottech.org/126054/windows-revie ... arch-tool/

Maybe this tool is like some other brilliant tools: development simply stops, because the developer is not interested to go on anymore, or has other goals in life, or there are too many 'free tools' around etc. But then again, the developer does not sell his code so someone else might pick it up using a different product name, whatever.
(Clipmate, once -and maybe still is- the best of all clipboard managers- still around but no new version, Flash Renamer - extremely fast and flexible rename - still around but no new version, etc)

I think all those asking what is happening should just chill.

I donated about a year ago, because for me, the program is essential and I use it constantly, but I don't consider my donation a right to future releases, as some seem to think.

The developer released Everything for free, his development schedule, sporadic as it may be, is his choice.

The reason for us (at least most of us) to be here on the forum is that we like this tool.
Although it is freeware some (or many?) were prepared to pay a donation.
As enthousiasts, the only thing we are hoping for is that developer is around, even if it's
only once in a very while, and this project will continue, albeit just with a tiny bugfix.
I guess there is nothing wrong with that.

I received a reply tonight from David, the developer, within 2 hours of emailing him directly at david@voidtools.com with a simple question about adding *.odt as a default extension for the Documents filter. He responded: ".odt added to the default filters for the next update." This is encouraging. :D

(He posted here on the 16th & 19th.)

BTW, you can add .odt to the filter list (now).
Search | Organize filters... Ctrl+Shift+F

I was happy to see the author is still working on beta versions - you can see his new releases here: http://forum.voidtools.com/viewforum.php?f=9
