Newbie question: Everything - Security

Post by StreifLicht » Sat Aug 22, 2020 10:24 am

I set up Everything to scan the local drive and a mapped network drive.
I have installed Everything as a portable version on a USB-Stick.
No shared index.
In the Directory where Everything.exe is located there is a file Everything.db
Is this the only file where ALL scanned data is stored? Or are there any other files?
I am wondering if the Everything is secure, since I allow the program to perform a full scan of all data.
Sorry if this is a thumb question. I just want to secure that the search process is secure.
Any comment is appreciated.

There is no full scan of data, contents is not scanned or indexed at all.
To access the data normal OS access rights take place.
The Everything.db is only stored on exit of Everything and is the only place where data is hold.
So the conclusion:
Everything is as secure as such a tool can be

Everything scans only filenames, including accompanying filesize, filedate. That information is saved in Everything.db (and nowhere else). As @horst.epp already mentioned: the content of these files (txt, doc, xls, etcetera) is not in the database.

You are the only one that can decide if that is save in your environment.

Hi there, this is my first post :)
I discovered this wonderful tool few month ago for personal use

The company i work for is very concerned about security.
So we made some tests with Lite Version 1.4.1 1005 Lite (x64) version with a security tool and found out some unexpected http queries :

http:// aa.online-metrix.net
http:// irs01.net
http:// mpsnare.iesnare.com

Can you tell me more about these urls ?

Thanks
Guillaume

They don't belong to Everything. Everything doesn't access the internet.
Only if you configured Everything to check for updates [1], it will check one single textfile and that file is on voidtools.com.

You might have an 'illegal' Everything already running somewhere on your system. Everything likes to re-use an already running instance.
Check Task Manager for Everything.exe running from an unknown path. Or search for other everything.exe's in Everything ;))

If that doesn't clarify this strange phenomenon, could you tell a little bit more on how we can reproduce this?

( BTW: I assume you downloaded Everything from the official source? )

[1] Menu:Tools > Options > General : Check for updates on startup
