Version 1.5.0.1248a (x64) no longer indexes .eml

Post by horst.epp » Mon Mar 22, 2021 5:33 pm

It looks like the current version does not index *.eml files.
It worked bevor all the time and I didn't change the config.

[Edit]
If I additionally add *.wdseml to the "Include only files" list they are indexed by Everything.
*.wdseml files are another type of Thunderbird mail file formats.

So the question is why does Everything not index *.eml ?

Windows search indexes *.eml (by default) and *.wdseml files thru its MIME ifilter.

For information:
You can also preview *.eml and .wdseml files in Explorer and Everything following this instructions:
https://www.winhelponline.com/blog/eml- ... r-windows/

Thank you for the bug report horst.epp,

Everything 1.5.0.1248 avoids using the iFilter for eml files because the built-in Windows iFilter modifies your eml files.

I have on my TODO list to add native eml support.

For now, please add your eml files to your text/plain list.

I will add an ini option to allow eml iFilters in the next update.

Thanks, that will be very helpful because I have Thunderbird set to store mails in the Maildir format
and so I have the full mail index in Windows search which I used often before the new Everyting version came out.
I never had problems with the stored .eml files and Thunderbird works flawless
while I search for mails with Windows search.

Adding the extension eml to the plain text list does not work for me.
I made the change and also did a rebuild but still no .eml content is indexed.

Thank you for your feedback horst.epp,

To make Everything index your eml content:
  • Please make sure you are using the latest Everything 1.5 alpha.
  • Everything 1.5.0.1250a adds support for the following:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, under the Debug submenu, click Config.
    This will open your Everything configuration file in Notepad.
  • Change the following line:
    content_builtin_eml_handler=1
    to:
    content_builtin_eml_handler=0
  • Change the following line:
    property_system_eml=0
    to:
    property_system_eml=1
  • Change the following line:
    text_plain_extensions=a;ans;asc;ascx;asm;asp;aspx;asx;bas;bat;bcp;btm;c;cc;cd;cls;cmd;cod;contact;cpp;cs;csa;csh;cshader;csproj;css;csv;cxx;dbs;def;dic;dos;dsh;dshader;dsp;dsw;efu;eml;ext;faq;filters;fky;fx;gsh;gshader;h;hh;hhc;hlsl;hlsli;hpp;hta;htm;html;hpp;hsh;hshader;htt;htw;htx;hxx;i;ibq;ics;idl;idq;inc;inf;ini;inl;inx;ipp;jav;java;js;json;jsproj;kci;lgn;log;lst;lua;m3u;mak;map;mdp;mk;odc;odh;odl;php;pkgdef;pkgundef;pl;prc;ps1xml;psh;pshader;py;rc;rc2;rct;reg;res;rgs;rul;s;scc;shtm;shtml;sln;slnf;sol;sql;srf;stm;tab;tdl;tlh;tli;trg;tt;txt;udf;udt;user;usr;vb;vbproj;vbs;vcp;vcproj;vcw;vcxproj;viw;vsh;vshader;vspscc;vsscc;vssscc;wri;wtx;xml;xsd;xsl;xslt

    to:
    text_plain_extensions=a;ans;asc;ascx;asm;asp;aspx;asx;bas;bat;bcp;btm;c;cc;cd;cls;cmd;cod;contact;cpp;cs;csa;csh;cshader;csproj;css;csv;cxx;dbs;def;dic;dos;dsh;dshader;dsp;dsw;efu;ext;faq;filters;fky;fx;gsh;gshader;h;hh;hhc;hlsl;hlsli;hpp;hta;htm;html;hpp;hsh;hshader;htt;htw;htx;hxx;i;ibq;ics;idl;idq;inc;inf;ini;inl;inx;ipp;jav;java;js;json;jsproj;kci;lgn;log;lst;lua;m3u;mak;map;mdp;mk;odc;odh;odl;php;pkgdef;pkgundef;pl;prc;ps1xml;psh;pshader;py;rc;rc2;rct;reg;res;rgs;rul;s;scc;shtm;shtml;sln;slnf;sol;sql;srf;stm;tab;tdl;tlh;tli;trg;tt;txt;udf;udt;user;usr;vb;vbproj;vbs;vcp;vcproj;vcw;vcxproj;viw;vsh;vshader;vspscc;vsscc;vssscc;wri;wtx;xml;xsd;xsl;xslt
  • Note the removal of eml; (this may already be removed as it is no longer included in v1250)
  • Save changes and exit Notepad.
  • In Everything, accept the prompt to reload your Everything configuration.
Everything should now use the eml-associated iFilter to read your email content.
Please note that the builtin Windows iFilter will modify eml files.

I have done all the steps and also rebuild the index
but *.eml files are not indexed.
The added *.wdseml which is also assigned to the Mime iFilter is indexed fine.
This files are in the same tree as the *.eml files.
This are the relevant lines I have in my Ini-File

include_file_content=1
content_include_only_folders=C:\temp\PDF;C:\Backup\Detached;C:\Documents\Privat;C:\Temp\Stadtspiegel;C:\Users\horst\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\eypx4io3.default\Mail\pop3.web-1.de
content_exclude_folders=
content_include_only_files=*.doc;*.docx;*.pdf;*.txt;*.xls;*.xlsx;*.odt;*.txt;*.eml;*.wdseml
content_exclude_files=
content_max_size=0

May be the path or dir tree level is a problem ?
A *.eml has for example the following path
C:\Users\horst\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\eypx4io3.default\Mail\pop3.web-1.de\1und1\cur\1578384012691-103440961259701221%234@cscorp.server.lan.eml
One of the *.wdseml is on the following path
C:\Users\horst\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\eypx4io3.default\Mail\pop3.web-1.de\1und1.mozmsgs\0Lczm1-1dlKK61kvY-00i5X8%40mbulk.1and1.com.wdseml

I made a verbose debug log and I see for *.wdseml the following:
2021-03-24 12:32:09.118: get property C:\Users\horst\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\eypx4io3.default\Mail\pop3.web-1.de\1und1.mozmsgs\0LgYbY-1cGlb20BEb-00ntuC%40mbulk.1and1.com.wdseml

Thank you for the debug logs horst.epp,

Unfortunately, you will also need to enable Property System support for eml to read content:
  • In Everything, type in the following search and press ENTER:
    /property_system_eml=1
  • If successful, you should see property_system_eml=1 in the status bar for a few seconds.
  • Force a rebuild from Tools -> Options -> Indexes -> Force Rebuild.
I will work on a fix.
